Not very entertaining.

Andrea is a twenty-something year old unsure of what her next chapter in life is. Her father passed away years ago and her mother moves from New York to Massachusetts to live with Andrea's brother, sister-in-law, and ill baby niece who never seems to grow.
Throughout the book we get a closer look into her relationship with her father, and his addiction and death. Likewise with her mother and brother, though she wasn't never really close with them.
I guess I just don't understand what this book achieved. She read a book, seemingly about grieving familial loss though not many details are shared, and suddenly she realizes how directionless her life has become so she begins to reach out more for support and connection. It's not until the very end does she discover this spark.
This book had potential thanks to her relationships and wild experiences but the ending seemed lazily accomplished. Two stars.

This book was a quick read and offers a glimpse into Andrea's life at different points in time. Andrea isn't a particularly likeable character. She is flawed and privileged with many problems. Her character doesn't offer any sort of "transformation," but she stays true to herself and her individuality is a bit refreshing.

I enjoyed reading a book about a woman in her late 30s that wasn't about motherhood or marriage or divorce. It was refreshing to see a flawed character that struggled with settling into a career she didn't love, dealing with her family, dating as you get older. The chapters flash between various stages of her life and by the end we get a full portrait of her as a woman and what it took to get her there. Be warned Andrea is not a likable character- so if you need characters to be likable, this might not be the book for you. Also there is drug use, lots of drinking and sex, and it is the story of a life of privileged people problems. This novel will not save the world, but it might help some women feel seen and understood and I liked it for it's originality. Would recommend to those that enjoy something a little different than the normal, young, looking for love, happy go lucky protagonists and want a more jaded, raw and honest New Yorker.
