The third act breakup was annoying and the couple was a little cringe however when you ignore those things it’s okay
it’s like if the third best thing by maya hughes was a little more sad and a little less sexy
It’s REALLY like 4.5 stars. The characters are INCREDIBLE and perfect. PERFECT. What brought the rating down was some repetitive language (that I personally didn’t care for) and the Hispanic representation was lacking (iykyk). BUT regardless it was such an enjoyable read and again I’m in love with the main characters

FMC wasn't exactly unlikable, but she was not perfect, even though she acts as if she is. She has a lot of hang-ups & seemingly a lot of mental issues... I say this as someone who has severe anxiety disorder & ADHD. So, let's just say I know what it looks like when one has an anxiety disorder & overthinks/second guesses themselves way too much. FMC's issues were quite self-destructive but also harmful to those around her. She pushes it all on her friends & family, & of course on the MMC the most. She's extremely judgmental of everyone but herself, & I also noted some internalized misogyny within her character as well (which is ironic, since she claims so hard that she's a feminist & therefore takes it upon herself to judge the men around her too). Now, with all of this being said, I felt for her & connected to her in a lot of ways. She could be relatable, funny, & endearing when she needed to be. I understood the struggles of her insecurities, as I too have been through a lot of that myself while growing up. FMC (her name is Mary) is brave & strong which makes her likable & admirable to see that she continues pushing herself, especially in her career.
MMC was written sort of flawless... Yes, he was "mean" to her when the 2 main characters were only just 15 y/o, but that was basically just a huge misunderstanding on both the main characters' parts. MMC (his name is Leo) is written as fit, handsome, kind, misunderstood, funny, & extremely friendly. It's only mentioned that he has a "bad" relationship with his father, but we as readers never actually see father & son interact with one another? MMC was absolutely head-over-heels for the FMC from the moment he sees her across the street from his house (they start out as across-the-street neighbors, but end up as roommates), & endlessly persues her even though she's nothing but rude & standoffish to him, seemingly (on his part/POV) for no reason. Since FMC treats him like this, he believes he's a "fuck up" which is sad that he thinks lesser of himself because of her. MMC doesn't really seem to have any flaws at all. He's a great football player, loves his mom (but not to the point of a "mama's boy"), treats his friends with kindness, sweet & kind to the FMC, all while being the stereotypical "jock-who-has-a-soft-side" & "kind-misunderstood-jock."
All in all, I really enjoyed the writing style of this book, & that's pretty much why I rated this as high as I did. I did also enjoy the slow-burn love in this book... it felt like when the 2 main characters finally got together, it was enough time & was deserved. I also think that this author writes love very well too; meaning, the love that the 2 main characters had for one another was believable. I do think that it was unfair of the FMC treatment of the MMC & she should've done more self-reflection before instantly judging someone else, especially without speaking to him first. It's as if she thinks the world revolves around her only. FMC has the worst case of main character syndrome I've ever read...
Even though it seems I hated this book from my own judgmental (sorry, kind of hypocritical here lol) review of it, I actually enjoyed this story & I do recommend it to others who want a quick, & meaningless love story of a FMC who is a tattooed lady (she makes it her whole personality, so be aware of this) & a flawless MMC who is a gorgeous football player (he's a one-dimensional character so that's really all you need to know about him).
