I liked the book in the end but I was pissed off from the start because the glossary of characters at the beginning of the book has a MASSIVE FUCKING SPOILER IN IT that made the whole first half of the book anticlimactic. PLEASE SKIP THAT SECTION I BEG

Twin brothers, Emil and Brighton, have idolized the Spell Walkers since they were much younger. The Spell Walkers, vigilantes out to rid the world of specters, have serious powers. The brothers are about to turn eighteen when the book opens and believe they will become Sleep Walkers automatically on their birthday. When that doesn’t happen, they know they will remain mediocre for the rest of their lives. Everything changes when Emil somehow manifests a power all his own.
The author didn’t fully realize his two main characters. His story line was slow in developing and the twins came off as being immature – the opening pages would have the reader believe these two are only fourteen or fifteen years old until the author tells us they’re eighteen. His minor characters are gay and people of color so much so that it’s as if the author wanted to be able to check both off of some kind of checklist for diversity that he had created in his head. It would have been nice if he had spent as much time developing the major characters in his book.
Another issue with the book is that the author fails to tell readers who the players are. For instance, he introduces Spell Walkers and celestials without telling his readers anything about them. Since they are major players, the lack of knowledge is off putting to say the least. The reader has to guess what and who both these entities are and why they are fighting. If you love fantasy, the author’s world building is sadly lacking.
The plot plods along with sudden bursts of activities leaving the reader on a rollercoaster. The reader must wait for something interesting to happen while his characters get all angsty, and the reader gets all bored.
This reads like a debut novel rather than a novel by a seasoned author.
My thanks to Harper Teen and Edelweiss for an eARC.
