He is amazing! Definitely recommend the audiobook, hear him tell his story. Plus that lovely accent…

Absolutely fantastic.
Equal parts humorous, informative, and moving. Seriously I laughed out loud at least once every chapter. I was horrified by some parts as Noah weaves the terrible, deplorable parts of the apartheid with his hilarious slices of life.
The last chapter though really was equal parts touching and moving.
Seriously, this is a really great read. I actually listened to the audiobook and I highly recommend it since he's the one narrating it. Really gives life to various parts of the different South African languages.
I'd recommend this to everyone.

Heartbreaking telling of Trevor Noah’s life. With great explanation of South African life for an outsider.

Literally read this in a day. Such a quick read. But definitely a rough read like it’s sad and emotional and I mean, I was expecting that but still. I read it while on the bike at the gym listening to the Batman scores and that was just an odd environment if you catch my drift.

Anyways, as heartbreaking as it was, it was very encouraging to read, knowing where Trevor Noah is now. Talk about perseverance.

I (very ignorantly) did not know pretty much anything about Apartheid and South African history (thank you American public schools) so this was also a history lesson for me which I appreciated.

The only thing that’s giving this book 4 stars and not 5 is that I just don’t know Trevor Noah. I think I’ve seen like 2 interview clips from his show and that’s it. I have no personal connection to him so reading this was powerful but also I felt like I could’ve read this book about another random stranger and thought the same thing. If I was a bigger Trevor Noah fan, I think this would’ve hit harder.

Side note: who tf did his mom survive a shot to the head. I for sure will be talking to all the neurosurgeons tomorrow to figure out how that’s possible lol

A super interesting read. I highly recommend the audiobook version so you can hear the proper pronunciation and dialects of the various languages referenced throughout the book. The story is engaging and complex. It felt like it was part memoir, part sociology lecture, and part history lesson. It tackled difficult subjects in a logical and calm manner and offered insights that truly made me think. I learned a ton through Noah's storytelling and would recommend this book to anyone wanting to broaden their horizons.
