It took a LONG time for me to get into this book. Written in the 60s(?), it holds up surprisingly well but just couldn't hold my interest. Romance? Check. Adventure? Traveling in Greece, Check. Mystery? Smugglers, Check. Ability to hold my interest... not so much.

A very good suspenseful thrillerish romance. The plot pulls you right along. This book also has an amazing use of setting. I was completely there, and when I surfaced out of the story for food and such, I always found it puzzling (and a tad disorienting) as to why I didn't see the Cretan mountains around me.
I'd never heard of this book before my mother gave it to me for Christmas this year. It was published in the 1960s, and I really had no idea what to expect. I found really enjoyed it. The writing is good -crisp and very British. The story is suspenseful, and I can see why it was made into a movie (starring Hayley Mills).
The Moonspinners is one of my all-time favorite books. And I mean that in like my Top 5 Favorites and we all know how difficult it is to choose favorites. I re-read this book probably once a year and my copy is so worn it’s going to start falling apart soon. I had felt like something light to read and I decided to go with an old favorite, so I picked it up again.
The writing is great, with wonderful descriptions of the lush Greek environment that makes you feel like you’re actually there, and that you can smell the verbena. The book goes fast, and you get sucked in immediately. Nicola is a great character, and actually all of the characters (Mark, Francis, Colin, Lambis) are wonderfully written and really well developed.
The mystery is great and keeps you guessing right up to the end. There are several intense moments that keep you sitting at the edge of your chair. And of course, there’s a nice little touch of romance. I love this book because it’s such a good, fun read and it’s so well written.

A gift from my coworker, who treasured it in her youth, I devoured this book yesterday on my sun-soaked deck. What a delightful read. I want to go to Crete!
2020 Review
Started slower than I remembered but worth sticking with it. Lovely adventure with a strong heroine and exciting conclusion.
2019 Review
Murder...Greece...an intrepid heroine.
I love Mary Stewart and this one is definitely up there as a favorite. The romance is slower too which works wonders for an otherwise foreseeable story. I love almost all her books and this one is up there even among my favorites.

My sister and I used to watch this movie over and over again when we were little. I'm glad to finally read the book. Nostalgia may have pushed it from a 4.5 to a 5, but it's a lovely read.
This was published in the US in 1963 and I think I discovered it not long afterward, which I mention only because that's how long I've loved it. If you've never seen the dreadful movie supposedly based on this book, I beg that you run quickly in the other direction. (No disrespect to star Hayley Mills, but she was terribly miscast). This is a really delightful novel which combines romance with intrigue - the plucky heroine, the handsome leading man and his charming younger brother, the swarthy villain #1 and the devil-may-care villain #2 - all set in a Greece so wonderfuly described by Stewart that I fell in love with the country in Chapter One.
I've long felt that few authors could hold a candle to Mary Stewart in terms of romance. I'm not talking bodice-ripping stuff, or graphic descriptions of "The" act, but love-at-first-sight stories set in exotic locations. At the conclusion of her books, I always feel that I've had a bit of a history lesson, with lots of literary allusions thrown in for good measure.
If you've never read any Mary Stewart, this wouldn't be a bad one to start with.

This books builds up lots of suspense and has a great plot but sadly the ending is anti-climatic
