Love when the author leans into the gaming tropes-such a fun way to short-hand worldbuilding without exposition dumps. Time to form a raid group to raid the dungeon and defeat the boss!
Despite the heavy (very cool) action the author still provides character moments that breathe emotion into space left to heighten the impact of reveals and story beats. The framing of the art and close ups of expressions is still wonderful.
I love the releationship between Frieren and Fern. This volume compares mentorship between Serie-Flamme, Flamme-Frieren, and Frieren-Fern and shows wider cultural evolution of magic and a personal level of growth. Something is handed down through each 'generation' and someone can leave a mark on a person even when they've never met.
It was incredibly refreshing for the author to call out those tropes in books where an organization takes a group of highly trained and valuable individuals and then kills most of them in a wasteful manner for the sake of competition. This test was such a smart way to show teamwork and characterization as people literally face themselves.
"I have always underestimated you." pg. 140
Frieren loves treasure. Mimics love Frieren. Steph loves book.

This volume continued the story of the First Rank Mage tests, and for the most part, it was a little more shonen-esque. Not as much as last volume with actual fights, but was still action, that while fun, I felt like wasn't fully what I was coming here for. We're still getting those bits of story and world building, and I'm still ready for more of that. Also, credit to the manga-ka, I actually love ending the volume on not just a cliffhanger, but a joke, and not taking the energy out of the drama or the comedy. It felt like it fit within the universe. And it really makes me curious where we're going to go next.
