There isn’t a world where a very mature and serious 21 year old would “fall in love.” With a very stunted 18 year old still in high school.

This is the first book I've read by Colleen Hoover, mostly due to the fact that I hardly ever read romance/heavily romantice books. But I'm attempting to branch out and read new things, and in regards to romance, I think "Slammed" was a great place for me to begin.
Hoover has a writing style here that is both familar but fresh- she combines tropes (and yes, a few cliches) with well-crafted phrases and imagery. Even though Lake says things such as, "I'm not like other girls" (ugh), I really enjoyed other aspects of the characters voices, like when Lake declares she's not ready to "stop carving pumpkins" (she wants to stay in the happy times and not think of the sadness ahead - this will make sense when you read the book!)
Also, I loved seeing slam poetry in a novel. I can't think of any other novel that has incorporated it, so the poetry just made "Slammed" all the more enjoyable. There probably could have been even more poetry included, but what was there was definitley good!
The main reasons I'm not giving it a full five stars are because of the aforementioned cliches, and the lack of solid character development. As much as I loved the relationship between Lake and Will, I don't think enough growth happened between them, as with Will individually. Lake showed quite a bit of growth, and I really enjoyed the family relationships she had. The mother/daughter growth was excellent, but with this being primarily a romance novel, I think there should have been more character development on Will's behalf.
It's a solid 4/5 stars for me - now I just need to decide which Colleen Hoover novel to read next!

I’m currently wiping my tears from my face. Let me tell you this book made me smile, laugh, cry and grieve. It is heavy, but so beautiful. Just like life. I didn’t really like the book at the start, but it’s SO WORTH READING!! I think it just became my new favorite book. I need to purchase a physical copy and go to a slam now. I absolutely loved the poetry part, and how good Will and Lake were for each other in moments that certainly weren’t easy. Read it, now!!!

Colleen Hoover never disappoints!

Slammed sets the standards really high, with it being the debut novel of Colleen Hoover.
Slammed made me feel so many emotions; one at a time and simultaneously.
It's not a typical romance book but a book that talks about things that happen in real life.

I love every single thing about it and I enjoyed the experience of reading the book.

A well-written youth romance with all of the angst and emotion one would expect. As I’ve grown used to with Colleen Hoover books, there is also a hard aspect not always discussed in YA novels. There are a few points that are hard to comprehend-such as not knowing what your date does for work/during the day which sets the tone for the entire book.

This book was a hell of a roller coaster of emotions. A wild ride. It messed with my heart and feelings and left me sobbing and laughing uncontrollably. Slammed can make you smile widely one second and cry like a baby the other second. I loved the poetry in the book – it encouraged me to write my own poetry. (I’ve written one and a half poems until now!) I felt like the relationship between Layken and Will was too fast for me. There wasn’t really any chemistry at the beginning. However, this was a beautifully written book with amazing characters! Loved it!

This is definitely my favourite Colleen Hoover book to date. You go into it thinking it'll just be another Contemporary, but then you'll get sucked into the deep message that's dug deep within. We all take life for granted, but I think Slammed really opened my eyes because it was so affected.

If I want to be a successful person then I have to be the one to go out and work my ass off. I won't get that far by doing nothing and waiting for it to come to me, so thank you Colleen Hoover for making me realise that.

If you love a good crying session then you'll enjoy this book. Sometimes a guy just has to cry and this one pushed all those tears out of my guard, which I call eye sockets.

I cried and cried, and cried.

Also that Slam Poetry was beautiful. Eddie's made me cry so much!
