I know I was reading a YA, but it felt more middle grade in terms of the writing. The struggles the characters had definitely fit the YA category but it just felt a little armature at some points. I also felt like there was too much that was being crammed into this story that could have been removed or at least more fleshed out. I would have loved to read more about the other romances happening in the background, especially the one between

Verna and Wanda

. Also, I feel like the audiobook probably made this worse because the pinning and the whole being in love parts came across a lot more, for lack of a better word, gooey, and I felt like that wasn’t necessary when these two were only in a relationship for 3 months max.

I went back and forth on this a lot because I'm a little over closeted stories at this point in my life, but honestly this one was so well done. It hit me right in the chest. Really sweet and adorable. Plus as someone who grew up on country music, I loved all the little references.
