I think this was such a cute lighthearted fun read. It is a middle school grade book but I still had fun reading it as an adult! It was a cute palette cleanser for me!

So here’s the thing, I liked some aspects of this book, and I think there’s a promising world here. There was a good character arc for two of the three main characters the ending was a good twist on expectations set up before. But it doesn’t feel fully developed. There was a lot, and I mean a lot, of stuff that happened that had no effect on the plot. Most of the adventure takes place in bite sized chunks where they encounter something new, the danger is over in a chapter, and then they move on to a completely new setting in the next chapter with few or no lasting consequence. I wanted to like it so much more than I did. All that said, I’m reading this as an adult, but I don’t think I’m the target audience. That’s not to say that fiction for younger middle schoolers can’t be developed extremely well and have depth, but I think they would like this more and I can think of several of my fifth and sixth grade students that might connect with this, especially reluctant readers that don’t have a ton of stamina to get through a book and/or need something that really moves.

I bought this book well over a year ago (the receipt was still inside it) after seeing a TikTok of the author’s promoting it. It is a bit younger than what I typically read, but the premise was pretty intriguing and it was only a few dollars (again, thank you receipt).

This was an entertaining tale of adventure with strong characters and setting. It was very fast paced, with obstacles and events happening from start to finish. We encounter a lot of diverse characters that help push our trio further. I do wish we got to know more about these side characters than just surface level information, but I think the brief appearances made sense for the story. I loved the aspect of this featuring stories within the stories, as our trio read about a lot of these monsters and cities from a tome of tales that helped to guide them before they encounter them in real life.

The trio of main characters did remind me a lot of the golden trio in Harry Potter (two boys who are best friends, one of which with a large appetite, and a girl who is seen as annoying because she is very clever and serious, but by the end the boys give her credit for her ideas, which save them multiple times. Also, by the end there is an implied crush between the girl and the boy’s best friend).

My only real critique of this is that the metaphors lost me quite often, and took me out of the story a bit. I love a good metaphor, and I think this definitely had some, but there were just a few too many.

I would definitely recommend this to any younger readers, and I think it would be quite popular with them. I’m curious to see how the authors new adult book compares.

3.5 stars—was an interesting mix of Columbian myth with an adventure tale but I wanted more development of the bonds between the characters.

It basically reads like Harry Potter and Divergent mixed together if I'm being honest.

DNF, 1/5 stars.
