So I feel like upfront I have to acknowledge that no one I’m friends with/follow gave this less than four stars, but I thought this was super overrated.
I didn’t really see why people loved this until the fourth issue, “Watchmaker,” and even then I only started to like it. My favorite excerpts dealt with Dr. Manhattan’s revelations (notably towards the end), though my favorite character was Silk Spectre and I wish she had been given more.
Watchmen is dated and sexist, and doesn’t hold up today. In the same way that Batman: The Killing Joke is noted for fridging Barbara Gordon, the way the narrative treats women is hard to read today. There's a difficult plotline involving rape, and while there isn't one correct way to write on that topic, I'm uncomfortable with the way things were resolved. I definitely wouldn't recommend this to anyone who finds the subject triggering.
I really wasn't a fan of the overall structure. I've seen people note the tightness of the series, but I thought it dragged on - it took me forever to get through the written bits between issues. There was also a parallel storyline involving pirates that felt superfluous and distracted from the main plot.
I know I'm in the minority on this one, but I think that in the 30 years since this was published, we've come a long way. There's better writing out there - yes, it's important to see the impact this had on comics, but it's by no means the best.
