This is my second or third time reading Watchmen and it’s still as great as ever. I think as the wheels of time turn, it feels more bleak and cynical. But it’s prescient and affecting. It’s one of those comics that makes me reconsider escapism entirely, despite how helpless and cruel humanity can be/is.

I need to read everything else written by Moore, stat. But I also need a break from powerful fiction making me feel a bit depressed. I do derive joy from how beautiful the new coloring looks in this new edition though. I’m definitely curious to see how the film will hold up for me.

Yes, it's amazing, but the dudes who think Rorschach is a cool, relatable character have kind of ruined it for me over the years :(

EDIT: yeah, reread for the 3rd time, still absolutely shreds. Highly recommend the show if you haven't seen it:)

stunning use of color for a story that exists in the shades of grey of right and wrong, heroes and villains.

excellent story that is unfortunately timeless and american.

Power is really ugly.
The individual people in Watchmen are not sympathetic: its most human moments are still done in broad, often red-tinted strokes, gloomy overtones and with characters trying to cringe out of the way of the massive text boxes which fill half the page. The protagonists themselves are rendered unflatteringly half of the time, with the most prominent being Roscach's mousy snarl or Doctor Manhattan's completely impassive expression and dick out look. Also Nite Owl's dad bod, which I feel like, you know, probably a generation too soon. Nite Owl stans unite. Come get your bread, himbo lovers.

Most of this story is a case study in different ways to give up on the world, different stages of desperation and the kind of edgy archetypes you get from it. Even as recently as Invincible, it's not hard to see how these characters have shaped the present media landscape. Still, their vague edges and gritty realism tend to ignore something of the soul of superheroism in the twenty-first century, as it has evolved, something around the intensity of commercialism (it's mentioned here, but superheroes are still something outside, something kinky and a little strange-- their sheer prevalence today is greatly understated by this narrative) and idealism and even more of the intersectional aspect? This story is not intersectional. I think that this reads more like the gristled root of an evolving genre, as the first real parodies of the Disney musical lead into the self-aware pit of parody that exists today with the redefinition and then constant insistence of tropes. The first level of irony before the abyss stared lovingly back. I feel like I should have more thoughts on this one. Might swing back.
