I almost dnf'ed this book after starting it for the second time. But I pushed through and then found that I wanted to keep listening, even when I had other stuff to devote by attention to.

Such an interesting premise for a fantasy creature/magical ability. The story itself was incredibly entertaining and I was invested in all of the characters. 

This book didn’t reinvent any wheels–which by no means was necessary for it to be a well structured and enjoyable story–but that added layer of complexity is something I tend to prefer, as is slightly more literary or elegant prose, hence the 3.75. 

The ending seems to have a few points added in there to explicitly set up for a sequel, and while an author can of course always surprise you, I do not think this book warrents or needs a sequel.  It stands perfectly well on its own and it feels like a situation where a lot of completely new material and ideas would be required to make the sequel feel worth it, but to an extent that it feels too far removed from the original.

Very solid book overall though, definitely recommended.
