Fever is book 2 in The Chemical Garden Trilogy and after reading Wither I was super excited to get my hands on Fever. However, even though overall I did enjoy the book it just wasn't up to the same standards as Wither.

Rhine and Gabriel have escaped! They are on the run trying to reach Manhatten where Rhine hopes her brother Rowen. However, it's not all smooth sailing. They end up being trapped in a carnival where girls are forced into prosititution. Trying to find a way to escape proves to be very difficult especially with Vaughn on their tale who is hell bent on getting Rhine back to mansion.

Now, I did enjoy this book for the most part. The beginning was very exciting and thrilling but it seems to slow down alot in the middle and doesn't pick up again until the last 60 or so pages. I didn't really like Rhine in this one. In Wither I was unsure about her but this one I just didn't like her. At times she comes across really selfish and her relationship with Gabriel just isn't believable to me.

Fever really feels like a filler book. Wither was amazing and this just felt like a set up book for the final book which I honestly think will be better because the ending to Fever was OMG, Epic! I did not see that coming. The last 60 odd pages where so good but the slow and at times very boring middle let the book down for me. I am really excited for the final book because I hope Linden will have a bigger role in it. As we don't really see much of him in this one. And I do like him. I know alot of people don't but there is just something about him that draws me to him.

Lauren DeStefano has created a very unique and thrilling story that is dark and at times very depressing but it works for this. I hope book 3 renews my faith in this trilogy. And I do recommend reading Fever if you have read Wither. And if you haven't read Wither then go now!!

Fever is the perfect blend of dark and twisted- with a dash of romance. Rhine has escaped the mansion and enters the real world- a life she has craved since her earlier capture. What she sees sends her reeling as she quickly becomes part of a twisted carnival. I must say I was not a fan of this carnival or the girls there.. Only Lilac and Maddie (who creeped me out just the right amount). I was still not sure how I felt about Gabriel and Rhine before reading Fever but as I read their connection grew slightly stronger as they tested their relationship out. I might love Linden more but I would not mind if she ended up with Gabriel.
Perhaps I should've rated this book higher. And I would have if not for the boredom I felt as Rhine remained in one place or the way the plot cartwheeled from one point to another. There would be whirlwinds of action followed by excruciating long moments of Nothing. At. All.
But I did not hate those parts. In fact, in a deep part of me, I slightly enjoyed just reading Lauren DeStefano's writing.
But the ending of this book was WOW.
I want to say but can't. So I'm going to go read Sever.

I really enjoyed the book. My only problem is that a lot of the book is just filled with filler material, like Rhine or Gabriel being sick and having them fall in and out of consciousness. The overall plot was very intriguing though

started this book but it felt boring..I was super excited to read this one after the 1st one...i felt this world of crazy genetic issues and polygamous relationships could have had an interesting plot..but i was bored 20 pages in...barely could pick up the book again after a few weeks of tryin so i decided to read summaries of the story instead and im glad i did...i think i would have been pissed if i actually read the last 2 books..what is it with these authors and getting lazy on the end of interesting stories? its ok to write one good book ppl! not every story has to be a trilogy or series LOL not every book is gonna be harry potter..pass on this...

Well I must say I'm disappointed. Rhine finds herself in a carnival that moonlights as a red light ( or 'scarlet') district, then at a real fortune-teller's house, and then is dying in an orphanage after trying to find her twin brother. You would THINK you had an exciting story on your hands..... no. It's dry and dull and boring and could have been SO much more awesome.

I know it's a YA novel but that's no excuse to not get into the nitty gritty of the story. It left out so many 'could-be' exciting parts and I kept wishing DeStefano wrote this differently.

I would have been cool if she told the second book maybe from a first-generations perspective, I mean think about it, seeing the world ending as every child they bring into it dies at age 20-25! Or spend more time in this crazy carnival I couldn't quite picture because it lacked so much desciption. Something, anything else added would have made this a four star for me at least.

Alas, I didn't write this book. After my tbr list is checked off I think I'll shy away from YA for a while. It just not fulfilling my needs anymore. Nevertheless, now I have to read the third book when it comes out just to find out what happens. sheesh. Rowan better be worth the wait.

Omg! I loved this book, I can't wait for the third novel...I want it now! I want to know what happens!

Fever by Lauren DeStefano, the second part of The Chemical Garden Series, made me question my ability to differentiate between real and crazy.

Apparently after Wither things continue to go downhill for Rhine. She remains determined to find her brother she makes her way North.

Sounds catchy and exciting right? She actually spends half of the book flashing between reality and fantasy, unable to decipher what's going on around her. Or perhaps I just dreamed the whole thing up along with her.

Warning: Spoilers!

SpoilerAnother weird cover for the Chemical Garden series. It's supposed to be Cecily but she definitely doesn't look 13-14.

Before I get into the story, I need to point out that I was completely content with the ending for Wither. A sequel almost feels forced. I understand that Rhine still hasn't found her brother and the "virus" is still killing the new generations, but when Rhine and Gabriel sailed off into the sunrise it felt pretty final.

Too bad they ran out of gas before they got to New York. Even worse is that they landed themselves right into another cage. A whore carnival run by a paranoid first generation.

The setting was both creative and horrifying. Sadly you're not given much of an understanding about time and space because this is where the drugs come in.

I'm not sure what's going on half the time. I had to reread quite a bit because every now and then Rhine falls into such a heavily drugged state or recedes into fever induced inner monologue and I can't follow what's going on around her. It's all a hazy blur that doesn't make sense through the writing. It's like standing on the sidelines while someone trips and raves wildly in front of you.

At least it's incredibly descriptive. Frightening so. Here and there I'll become so lost in Rhine's fever dreams that I'm sure I'm either high or dying. (⊙īšâŠ™)

There are so many beautiful insights. Rhine is incredibly perceptive. This is a lot darker than Wither, showing that the world is a lot more painful than the mansion and Rhine is just the pitiful creature stuck roaming it.

The majority of the plot felt like filler. Nothing too important.

At least the ending served it's purpose. Amidst the crazed nightmares something actually happened. The last couple chapters were quite exciting. It broke my heart to see Rhine leave Gabriel though. I look forward to reading Sever. Hopefully Rhine won't be so drugged up this time.

I read this pretty damn quick compared to the first. Maybe it's because I did partly skim through it. But still I wanted to know what was happening.

It took me ages to get to this, but I finally did.

This book begins almost right where the other one ended, a lot of things happened and Rhine is still the same, steady voice narrating that story. I do like her voice, I like Destefano's pacing and I actually have mixed feelings about this one. I did enjoy it where I had a bit of trouble with the first, though in the end and when I think over it, I really did like the first. For this, I liked that we see more connection between Rhine and Gabriel, though their relationship is the kind I've come to like. In the first they got to know each other and ended up running away together. In this one, you see them together, and how much they care about each other, though I got a sense of 'omg not another pair of old people' syndrome, since they were so comfortable with each other, sleeping next to each other and worrying about each other like they'd been in a relationship for a long time. But I still liked it. I liked it because when I look back on the story as a whole, there are moments and themes that I wanted to see and hear more about. There are some sequels that get into a frenzy of action when the first had been slow and well paced. This one contains a little more action, yet, it's still slow and well paced.

Although I have to say, I don't like the 2D feel of Vaughn's character. And I don't like how Linden seems. Cecily, the formerly annoying little brat, appears at the end, and I like the improvement in her character. Gabriel is a little boring too, but he reminds of the kind of guy whose a little lame and a little boring, yet never forgets whose the most important to him. And I think that's what I like about him the most. I would prefer Gabriel to some other hot headed sweetheart love interest. At least Gabriel is sweet. He feels like the right match for Rhine.

I want to read Sever. I want to read it now.

Actual Rating: 2.5
This book was so frustrating. It was comprised of walking and illness which birthed a very tedious read. I still want to read [b:Sever|12383869|Sever (The Chemical Garden, #3)|Lauren DeStefano|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1343168408s/12383869.jpg|17364649] but the way this book dragged on and on has put me off the series for a while. The "plot twist" at the end of this book did not feel like a plot twist at all.

Weird book. Just plain weird. The author doesn't explain things and all of a sudden people are here and there and alive and dead...no organization. So confused. It also seems to be all dreams...ugh. And the ending...HORRIBLE!
