While reading the first chapter, I forgot for a second I had picked up a sci-fi, but that was a good thing and started things off pretty interesting. The main theme/focus of this short novel is very upfront and explores the line between advanced technology and its perception as magic. But it also reminded me of a weird mash-up of Annihilation, with a very futuristic human version of Muderbot and some classic sword and sorcery fantasy, but again, all wrapped up in a sci-fi.

An easy read, and in hindsight, the most obvious crossover of genres. But handled so well, that I wish this could have been a video game.

The alternating narrators immediately hooked my attention, from one perspective of legends and duty and magic, to the scientific technology and terraforming and anthropological musings.
All the linguistic bits tickled me, and I love how Nyr's words translated to what Lyn and Esha understood. I kept on expecting that thedemons they were fighting to be something explicable through Nyr's understanding of science and tech, but in an interesting twist it reveals itself to be almost as impenetrable to Nyr as Nyr is to Lyn.
