The plot started off slow then hooked me enough to keep me going, I was liking Poppy’s character so stayed invested, however the quality of the dialogue writing seemed to go from being believable and interesting to completely stilted and repetitive. I saw the twists coming from a mile off - which I don’t mind, to be honest - but the way Hawke’s character changed became so creepy and unsupportable that I couldn’t even be conflicted in shipping them at the end, all I could feel was discomfort and weirded out, for lack of a better phrase. It may be that this is something tackled in the next book as with ACOTAR, but I don’t think I’m invested enough to put the time in. The world building is strong and the driving societal conflicts are layered and clever, so between those and Poppy’s character, I’ve given this 3* ☺️

I'm surprised to see a lot of terrible reviews on this - but given the fact that I read it in 4 days (and would have read it much sooner if I didn't have a job and a family 😂), it's safe to say that I really enjoyed it.

I looooove slow burn and descriptive writing. Really the only negative on this for me is that I could see the plot twist coming, but that wasn't a huge deal to me.

Re-reading this as an audiobook was such a delight! Stina Nielsen does an impeccable job bringing Poppy and Hawke to life. My only gripe is that there was some inconsistency with the voice choices of different characters, so it was sometimes hard to keep track of who was speaking at specific times.

Do you like steamy romance with very clear consent? Yeah. Then this book is not for you.

Also- why… just WHY are the two people that are “bound” to the main (white) characters the only fleshed out characters of Color? Gross. Racist and gross.

I kept thinking, okay maybe I am missing something. But no. We’ve got virginity tropes, “I know better that you about your own safety” tropes, and an age gap that feels as yucky as Rhys and Feyre’s would’ve had the batboy not understood the meaning of no.

Skip it.
