I went into this book knowing almost nothing about it other than how much people have been raving about it online.

So lemme tell you I was a little shocked at the supernatural aspects but honestly it brought me back to my 2010 reading roots.

It was pretty predictable - but the karma added in made it a lot more enjoyable than other predictable books in the same genre. I also rolled my eyes a couple of times at decisions made and at certain scenes.

So in short, this book gave me a lot of mixed feelings but honestly I had a great time and I’m gonna read the next one. Probably tomorrow, who’s to say.

I enjoyed this read, all though I saw right through the twist the entire time, I still felt a wide range of emotions through the entire reveal. The characters are captivating and grow on you as the story progresses.

This book had some issues. I saw someone else review about the weird century incongruities and I totally agree. It was confusing there could be electricity but warfare still only uses swords and daggers. Also this book just had rampant emotional manipulation from everyone. I found this exhausting.

And maybe I’ve just seen this too much, but,
I am sick of seeing 200+ year old vampires/immortals with 18 year old girls and I felt the way this book was written weirdly fetishizes the 18 year old primary protagonists virginity. I also felt the way the abuse by the duke and Lord Mazeen was portrayed was almost as a titillation not as the horrible emotional and physical torture it was. I find those types of scenarios hard to read no matter what, but, I wish it had been dealt with in a more delicate manner

Unfortunately I think I’ll read the next book because I’m always too curious about what will happen.
