It took halfway through this book for it to get interesting for me - then whoa baby does it pick up!

The beginning was very slow and a bit challenging, but it was worth it.

This book needed a better editor. The bare bones of the story were fine, but the author needed her word count to be massively edited down. I got tired of the endless mental monologues and repetitive mental processing. Show me; don't tell me! And definitely don't tell me the plot's revelations multiple times!

By the end, I was tired of the main character. I think she was intended to be a spunky fighter, but mostly she just came off as petulant and immature. I was done when it came to the scene where she refused to eat or bathe to spite everyone else. That's stupid.

The end scene was just absurd. Spoiler:
He didn't even propose so much as tell her she was going to marry him ... in a room full of people. What a strange leap!

I can't with this book. Will not be continuing the series.

Honestly, I wanted more plot out of this book. I appreciate that the spicy scenes weren’t many, though they existed and a lot of the book felt like it was a vessel for their will-they/won’t-they rather than world building to create a comprehensive story, but this is a romantasy, so…

On a scale of spiciness, I would put this at maybe a two or 2.5? There were three scenes of graphic intimacy and the rest were just her feelings and some heavy making out,

The characters weren’t amazing. I actually really didn’t like Poppy and felt like what we did get in characterization was a lot of being spoon-fed how tragic we should have found her life, but also how badass she was. Hawke was okay, but not as clever as the banter that didn’t banter wanted us to believe. I wasn’t surprised by the twists, but the fight scenes were okay.

Overall, this isn’t that deep, but it didn’t really need to be to do what it was trying to: set up two star-crossed lovers who weren’t meant to be and get them to the high-stakes situation that changes their lives forever while overcoming betrayal and other obstacles. If you like Fourth Wing and ACOTAR, I think you’d like this one, too.

This wasn't terrible, but it also was not good. The pacing felt super off and I'm not sure if it's just because I read it in two parts due to listening to the audiobook, or if it was something else. For me, the first half was really slow but kept me really engaged because it was interesting, but the second half was really fast paced and boring because it was so predictable. It all just felt very off. I am not a fan of the male love interest and found the entirety of the plot (our government is actually bad, who knew?) to be superrr predictably boring.

The characters were not well developed or well crafted. The audio book was really good because it was a full cast of characters which is always more fun.
