Good ending but rather read like Cadfael swallowed a dictionary.

In at number 3 on my medieval monk chart:

1. Narcissus and Goldmund
2. Q
3. The name of the rose

4. Pillars of the earth

I loved the ending-- it was a challenge to get through but absolutely brilliant messaging. Be warned, the narrator loves to go on tirades and diatribes that are not entirely relevant unless you have a deep passion for the history of Christian sects in the 1300s Italy. However, the Totally Subtle descriptions of the gay monks were the funniest things I've ever read.

kind of a slow burner but highly rewarding if you stick with it until the end - such an intriguing “whodunnit” story in a religious context. admittedly the religion stuff and the amount of latin can feel a little dense, but not distractingly so. read this instead of whatever dan brown has churned out.
