Think Neon Genesis Evangelion meets the supernatural.

there's a lot of interesting plot elements to this piece that I think makes it work well. The main character does kinda confuse me, and to be honest I don't really know the genre of this story. Seeing as it's an ongoing comic, hopefully some of the plot holes will be revealed.

the art is pretty as well

A bit of a frustrating Law Of Diminishing Returns books. What begins as a typical, but well-fleshed out haunted house/teen outsider coming-of-age story devolves into kind of a muddled mess of mythology that even the author doesn't quite understand.

I enjoyed the protagonist. I liked her friends. The deaths were interesting. But it tried to take a turn into sci-fi detective mech story about halfway through, and then it seemed to entirely lose its focus. The final issue's "climax" of the protagonists unlikely kind of sort of battle with the sci-fi team's kind of sort of mech ended almost instantly and seemed to undo the entire buildup from the previous issues. I was left thinking "Why did I read this? And more importantly why did the person write this if they were going to abandon their characters and premise so quickly?"

It's comics, so I'm sure the next volume could undo or retcon the ending to this volume, but I have a difficult time believing they can make any sense of it. It seemed like the whole volume was to set up a minor character from this chapter becoming the protagonist for the next collection. Except they didn't make that character at all interesting during this storyline, so why should I invest myself in another volume?

It's a pity because I'm not usually a horror fan, and I thought the first two issues showed some real potential.

If you're a fan of subgenre whiplash in your graphic novels, you might really enjoy this. It wasn't for me.

Is ghost-mech a thing? Apparently!

I enjoyed this quite a lot: set in 1994 with a punk vs grunge undercurrent, underdogs fighting for their place in the world, battles of the bands (literally), and ghosts! It was absolutely my kind of story, complete with some truly gorgeous art panels.

i liked this! it was pretty fun, i adored the artwork and i think the setting of 1990s LA was super fun. it felt somewhat base level for the first volume, but i’ll probably pick up the sequel.

Liked this - ghost vibe (some cool designs), and nice art/the neon style. Story progresses quickly - looking forward to reading the rest.

A vibrant, fun take on the haunted house story. VERY different. There’s a looseness to the story - there’s a feeling it could go in pretty much any direction - that I really enjoyed. There are definitely some question marks in my head around the house and exactly what was going on there. I read these as single issues so that might be part of the problem. But this is also volume one so maybe we’ll pick more of that up later.

If we simply must be bathed in 80s & 90s nostalgia in all forms of fiction, I can only wish more of them were as creative, fun, & beautifully rendered as Home Sick Pilots.

This turned out to be scarier than I anticipated, but I confess to being a total chicken when it comes to ghost stories and the main thing Home Sick Pilots is is one very imaginative ghost story.
There are some good bones to the story, but nothing ever really gets fully explored. What made it enjoyable is the utter craziness of the ghosts and the over-the-top violence that just keeps getting bigger and bigger.
I particularly love Caspar Wijngaard's art for this. The art is the perfect match for the story. It's detailed yet sketchy in a mix that creates some very memorable images.
