is book. I didn’t cry or sniffle. Too much shock value turned me numb. I went in this blind, barely skimming the summary and I was only a few chapters in before I could tel this wasn’t the one for me. I understand the need to bring up the issues that Hoover did but I felt like she was packing on so much that the main concern I had was - anything else ? The initial conversation between Ryle and Lily alone made me want to roll my eyes. There is no way people in their early twenties talk like that. The Atlas part was sad but Hoover gets you so caught up in Lily & Ryle that Atlas barely fits into the story. I definitely think if Hoover focused only on one plot element, this would have loads stronger. Nothing against the author personally just now meant for me.

I can now officially say that i get the Colleen Hoover hype. This story was so powerful and the writing was amazing. I only read verity before i read it ends with us so I didn’t really know what to expect. I was immersed and I can’t tell how much I love it. It represented the reality of such situations with such beautiful characterisation for the leads. A friend said that every character in this book needs therapy😂 I agree. But that’s what makes them realistic to me personally.

On the cover of the copy I own, Kami Garcia’s quote was printed. It said, “Every person with a heartbeat should read this book.” I agree.

The ONLY issue i had with this book was that certain parts felt too cheesy. I can’t have everything but honestly I enjoyed the cheese too. I don’t want to talk about the characters because it’s simply something one has to read and find out.

This book was a rollercoaster ride for me. Honestly, I really didn't like it at the beginning. I thought the writing wasn't that great. And, I thought both the plot and characters were unrealistic. I didn't like Ryle from the start
for good reason!
.
And personally, I only liked Lily's journal entries during Part 1. However, once we got to Part 2, my feelings about the book started to change. Colleen Hoover did a fantastic job putting outsiders in the mind of a victim who is in an abusive relationship. People ask why do they stay with their abusers? Why don't they leave them? This book shows readers why doing that isn't always so simple.

So, I love the message and how it's told in this book. However, that doesn't change the fact that I wasn't of the writing, especially during the first part of the book. I will say, I LOVE Atlas, and plan on reading the sequel, It Starts With Us, when it comes out in the fall. So, I will probably reread this book around then to refresh my memory. If so, we'll see if my opinion/rating will change then.

I genuinely adored this book! what happened later really upset me,
the fact Ryle hurt Lily multiple times and even tried to rape her hurt my heart
Hoover really was amazing at expressing how manipulative abusers can be and how despite their actions you still want to forgive them, it was beautifully written and so real

Ugh why does this have so many 5 star reviews? It was engaging and I couldn't put it down so I'll give it that, and it does a good job of addressing all the nuances of domestic abuse and how hard it can be for the abused to leave those situations (definitely needs a trigger warning though because I was not expecting that!). However, otherwise the book just didn't make sense.
It was supposed to show how charming, charismatic people like Ryle can be deceiving, yet he showed so many red flags from the get go. Everything seemed to come so easy to Lily, it wasn't very realistic. Then, probably what I hated the most... THERE WERE ABSOLUTELY NO REPERCUSSIONS FOR RYLE. Like none, whatsoever. Lily left him (which should have been a given) but otherwise nothing.  He got to have unsupervised time with his daughter (yikes! Definitely super problematic for a violent abuser and almost rapist!), he kept his career success, his relationship with his sister (who was lily's best friend) and her husband did not change (they named their daughter after him...after they knew he was violent towards his wife!), he didn't get arrested for any of the times he hurt Lily, and they mention absolutely nothing about him working on himself except one flippant comment about how he used to go to therapy when he first explained his 'condition' to lily (though emphasized that it wasn't an excuse, it 100% was). I just have so many issues with this book, but the whole fairytale wrap up at the end felt so fake and unrealistic its as if all the characters completely ignored Ryle's previous behavior and everyone had a happy ending anyways. I was waiting for some sort of explosive ending to come that just never happened
