For starters, this book did not seduce me at all... I was unable to relate with any of the characters(except maybe Loki)... Very towards the end I even forced myself to continue reading......
Here lacks the magic that Harris has accustomed me in other books (when I heard of this book, I thought to myself, Harris, magic and Norse gods? Have to read it NOW!), perhaps the wrong thing on this book is right there.. I was waiting for the "normal" and this book is an exception.
It seemed to me that some parts of the story are a bit disjointed; throughout the book I felt I was missing something, of not being able to cover the whole story and all the characters ...
On a positive note I liked the ending (although I discovered the traitor to soon...), the best part of the book for me.

I had hopes for this massive fantasy novel from a well-known adult novelist, but it feel short of the mark for me. The world Harris creates is just too complex with too many characters and too many levels that it is difficult to keep straight, and I wonder how a 12-year-old could possibly comprehend everything she has going on. Plus, even in the midst of all the of the complex world creating, it became very obvious from an early stage what the plot twist was going to be be--disappointing.

The only copy of this I could find is the audiobook, and the narrator has the single most annoying voice I've heard in ages. It might be fine for a different kind of novel, but the lisp and the nasal fingernails-on-a-chalkboard vocal tone are serving the story BADLY.

edit: The world building was really great, and it was a cool riff on Norse gods and an interesting sort of dungeon crawl of a novel. But there were way too many minor characters I couldn't tell apart, and keeping track of the various factions who mostly wanted the same thing was impossible.

I'm still completely annoyed at the narrator for not distinguishing enough between voices and for making several of the voices overly childish. I'm still baffled by why various characters were given American, English, and Irish accents...with the young protagonist sounding American and most of the villains sounding English. Never mind that members of the same family were given wildly different accents. I ended up speeding up the player to minimize the lisp...but the reading distracted enormously from the book itself.

By contrast, a good audiobook reading can improve a book, as was the case with the first Skulduggery Pleasant novel. It's a good kids' novel, but the reading (except for the stupid musical interludes, gah) was awesome.

This was a wonderful romp through Norse mythology and one girls' quest to discover the truth of herself, Order, and Chaos.

I didn't find it funny, really, as much as it was simply delightful, with the characters having a real depth, and Maddy, as one of the only 14 year old girls I actually enjoyed reading about. Its not to say that there were not funny moments in it, but the whole book is not laugh out loud funny as much as it has some chuckles in it.

But it is well worth the read for anyone who likes young adult books, fantasy, or hell, has the least bit of interest in Nordic mythology. Really, its wonderful.

I am even more surprised I liked it since I was somewhat torn about another book I read by the same author (Gentleman and Players), but this was just a completely different type, so it is rather like comparing apples to oranges.

But there is a twisty bit at the end.
