Dull

3,5/5 stars. I adore Leigh Bardugo and her writing style, how it carries away in the magical world. I also adore her, again, big accent on the characters, especially the female protagonists. Every character felt alive, cruel, reckless, stupid at times but so human I enjoyed following their journey. The idea to make the setting
more historical was an interesting choice but I like how it added some “classic” flavor to the story making it feel like an old fairy tail, especially combined with nicely integrated old English dialogues and magic that made
absolutely
no
sense

oh my god the magic system literally does not exist in this world and every time the MC does something extraordinary it just never get explained,,,,, the whole ending basically happened based on “magic goes brrrr” i really REALLY got annoyed at how overpowered MC was

oh and the whole romance line kept hinting on being a slow burn during the first half of a book and then hit me in the guts with the most rushed and unnecessary sex scene ever why Leigh I know you can write slow burn whyyyy

Nonetheless, an amazing book, I would love to see more one-shots from LB like this

Not my usual genre. I used to have an academic interest in the Spanish Golden Age which is mainly why I read this. I don’t think the setting was that well constructed though….or the plot.. I kept waiting for things to pick up and they just never did… orrr maybe I just don’t like fantasy idk

I only can’t give it a 5 because of how long it took me to get into it but this was spectacular and beautiful!!

2.5 This book really did not land for me. Partially I think it was my high hopes and expectations, having loved a lot of Leigh Bardugo's works in the past. But partially I think it just wasn't that good--I see what she was trying to do, and I think she didn't really land. I wanted--more, just in general. More of Luisa's exploration of power and magic and what she can get from the world, more romance that was believable, more political intrigue that was interesting, more exploration about Jewish life in the Inquisition era besides just magic and some vague relatives in other lands...I just wanted everything to be more believable and more interesting. And honestly, I didn't really like the romance too. The power and age differential felt really weird and didn't feel justified though I could see her trying, and I just didn't find them to have much chemistry. Still an interesting read, I liked the setting and the magic and a lot of the plot and characters (weirdly Valentina??), but for so long a book, it really gave me very little.
