If I’m being completely honest, I felt very disconnected from this read the entire time I read it. I was underwhelmed by the plot and the characters, feeling a lack of stakes and development of relationships across the story. I did enjoy the setting and the historical elements (though I’m sure not entirely accurate), and much of the story in concept.

My main issue with this book is that it could have been much better if the trial didn't existed. The beginning and the end are interesting, they showcase the different characters personalities and ambitions; meanwhile the middle of the story feels rather empty.
Now. Bardugo's writing style isn't enough for the genre; she might have done good research for Spanish Golden period, but if it wasn't for the locations or historical characters I couldn't have guessed it. This is something apparently usual for many writers who have just started developing stories based on a different historical time, however, it's still annoying to read the anachronistic behaviour of the characters.

The characters were very well developed and 3-dimensional in their wants and motivations, which i really liked. While the magic that Luzia had wasn't really explained, it didn't have to be to make the story feel coherent. The only thing that I didn't like was that the first half felt disjointed from the second. The plot twist was one good new thing, but it was so many different pieces of new info that it felt like we were in a different story, or at least that the story should have started differently. I also really liked the end, but we never figure out how Luzia is bringing Santángel back to life every morning or how they both turned immortal. Idk maybe I'm just too dense to pick it up if they did say it lol.
