Another unique thriller by Ruth Ware! I loved the premise of “pen-testing” and I learned so much about it through Jack’s experiences through the book. I enjoyed the high-stakes and the lengths Jack had to go to undercover who was responsible for her husbands murder. While I knew who was responsible about 40% in, I still enjoyed the journey. I will say Jack’s decisions did not always make sense, but sometimes that is part of the fun of these thrillers. This continues to cement my love of Ruth Ware.

This book couldn't figure out if it was trying to be a murder mystery or a suspenseful action novel, and it failed spectacularly at both objectives.

Read in one sitting. Read it all night. Usually am at least a little bored by Ruth Ware, but this one kept my interest the whole time.

I think at this point, I have read all of Ms. Ware's books, which is silly because she is just not my jam! I also realized in this book that I do not like a fugitive story because I just want everyone to sit still for 5 seconds, so I can psychoanalyze them. The pace of the book was pretty fast, but there were also dragging bits about grieving, which slowed things down. The beginning was much too Mr.-and-Mrs.-Smith-rosy-perfect-flirting, which felt really unrealistic. Just not my thing. Also all of the tech speak kind of felt like it was googled and then shoehorned in.

More about plot than character. The bad guy is easy to figure out--and done far earlier than Jack does. It drags in places and the wound seemed pointless as she faced many other obstacles and the behavior by the police would have put her in hospital, anyway. That kind of illness? I didn't buy her running around like she was.
