This was a great magical realism tinged look at the Klan and the history of racism in America. The real strength of this book is how it talks about and how the MC is able to take ownership of their pain and loss. The topic is undeniably heavy but the way the story is told is engaging and has some humor to it.

I listened on audio and enjoyed the different voices and tones the narrator uses.

First off, Channie Waites deserves so much of the recognition for why I enjoyed this book so much. I am so thrilled by how fantastic her narration was, and also by how this book captivated and enraged me. I was nearly crying at several points too, and listened to it basically non-stop.

I was thinking of docking half a point as some of the scientific explanations came across as pretty on-the-nose (all the stuff near the beginning
about hatred during the dissection scene
) but by the end I just did not give a f*ck. So heartbreaking and empowering, enraging and informative.

I'd recommend this book to pretty much anyone - unless you don't like gore.

This genre isn’t usually my speed but I am so glad I read it! The prose style is simple, powerful, and beautiful. The use of dialect and imagery gives such a great window into this world and these lovable characters. I felt like I was reading a folk tale, an epic, and a high art piece all at once. The body horror and gore was done tastefully — it was shocking and gruesome without being unreadable for my squeamish self. My biggest critique is that it was almost too fast-paced for my liking and I would have really liked to see a deeper dive into the characters and the world building. I did love it though, and would totally read a sequel if one ever comes about!

The horror, the social commentary, the history. Everything about this book was amazing. I could not stop listening to it until I finished it.

the worst thing about this book is that it’s not longer. i want more. i wasn’t expecting to have so much fun with this. the characters drew me in and the lore felt so well established for only 180 pages of story. highly recommend for fans of justina ireland’s dread nation

It was short with sweet twists and turns.
I really liked the way the characters were described.
Noticeable that a man wrote a female character but all the same a likeable heroine.
I did not feel that attachment to the characters which can happen with short books.
The focus on racism was not the main picture, but the pain of slavery was mentioned.
