כותרת המשנה של הספר, וגם גב העטיפה, מדברים על אהבה שיכולה ללכת לכיוונים נוראיים. אישית, אני חושבת שמדובר במה שקורה כאשר נותנים למחלת נפש להתפתח בלי טיפול ואולי אפילו מעודדים את ההתנהגות של החולה. כמובן שמדובר פה במימדים גרוטסקים אבל זה עדיין הרגיש יותר מידי אמיתי ומשכנע.
זה ספר קשה לקריאה ואני לחלוטין מבינה למה משווים אותו לסטיבן קינג, יש בו משהו שלופת את הלב ומקשה על הנשימה ועדיין אי אפשר להפסיק.
אם אוהבים אימה ולא מפחדים מאכזריות, אני ממש ממליצה עליו. אבל הוא לא מתאים לאוהבי ספרי מתח. לפי דעתי אפילו שבדרך כלל הספרות הסקנדינבית קשוחה מאוד הספר הזה קשה יותר מהרבה דברים אחרים שקראתי. אולי בגלל שאנה ריל מצליחה לשמור על איזון בין לתאר אירועים מאוד אלימים לבין לא לרדת לפרטי פרטים של כל הדם וכיוצא בזה

This is the book you wont really see being read often. And it should be. Because it is dark, it is gut-wrenching, it is brilliant. It has vibes of Where the Crawdads Sing meets Educated with a touch of a Gillian Flynn. ⠀

The writing is simple yet you will find yourself touched by every sentence. Guess that is the way of the Scandinavian authors, which I get to love and appreciate more each day (thank you Mr.Backman for that). It's a story told through multiple characters, a story about the lengths we would go to keep the ones we love close, and what a deep sadness can do to a person. Because, through all of it, there is just an amazing amount of sadness. But be careful, this is not an easy book. Not at all. You will get suspense, you will get weirdness, you will get family issues and borderline behaviour, and you will get some scenes that will shock you in a bad way, some that might even make you want to gag. But in all of that you will care so much for all of the characters, and even though the things they do are not justified by any means, you will understand their reasons and still feel for them. And I believe, that is a sign of an exceptional writer. That in all the disturbance, in all of the dark and twisted things, in all of her horrendousness, she manages to show us humanity.⠀

Needless to say I recommend this one to everyone. Ok, not everyone, maybe only the ones with a hard stomach. But I dont have one and I still enjoyed the hell out of it. ⠀

Resin is one of those novels that it's hard to say that you 'enjoyed' because it makes you feel so on edge, so deeply uncomfortable. So perhaps I can say that this is an unsettling but good read.
Liv is six years old when her father reports her missing and dead. She lives isolated on an island with her mother and father, hidden from the world. Her father, Jens Horder, was brought up here too, on the Head, a small island attached to a larger one by a strip of land known as the Neck.
Her Grandfather had been a carpenter and instilled a love of trees and nature into his younger son. Liv never met her Grandfather but she had gleaned a similar interest from her father.
Nowadays, the house doesn't look as it did in her Grandfather's day - there is stuff everywhere. Her Dad hoards things, convinced that they will be of use, scared that anyone will try to take them away from him. That's why he told the police that Liv was dead, then no-one could take her.
As I read and uncovered the history of the Horder family, I became increasingly unsettled, and yet unable to stop reading.
While this book is dark and disturbing, it also captures the emotional relationship between parent and child. Liv's innocence of youth and her sheltered life add to this, providing quite a contrast from the constant foreboding feeling I had as I read.
It is also a very atmospheric novel. Riel has captured this island location beautifully, with the feel of isolation further compounding the story.
I'm finding Resin a very difficult book to describe without giving away any spoilers. I should give you a warning though that this book contains animal cruelty and infant death. Consequently, it won't be a book for everyone.
What I can say is that this is a disturbing, but memorable read that will keep you on edge from the first page until the very last.

This is a particularly disturbing tale of obsessive love and the dangers of isolation. Despite some appalling acts, you do foster extreme empathy for all the characters. This offers an understanding, if not acceptance of why they did what they felt they needed to.
It is an emotional read but I'm so glad I did. Ane Riel is an extraordinary gifted writer and I'm so pleased to have discovered her.
