A very good addition to the EU, and another great Star Wars novel by Claudia Gray. Beautiful portrait of Alderaan and life inside the galactic senate under imperial rule. The audiobook was awesome for this one.
It was a pretty typical YA book. Some of the story bugged me because it doesn't quite fit what I've known of Leia but that might be my fault. All in all, a light/fun read. A few predictable storylines.
Why on earth did it take so long to get a teenage pre-rebellion fighter Princess Leia book?! This was everything I wanted in this type of book. Seeing Princess Leia as a person becoming an adult, Alderaan culture, how she learned the skills she has, how she became part of the rebellion, her adopted family, just so much. My two biggest issues were that knowing what happens to her planet (how I loved the characters) and that there isn’t more book. Why is there only one? I need more teenage Leia. The only thing is that you’ll need to know the prequel movies to get all the references and characters (I ended up googling one character.) Wonderfully written. I can see why people love Claudia Gray’s work. Already picked up more by her.
Honestly, the fact that this YA book took me 3 days to read should be enough of an indicator as to why I only rated it 3 stars. I was mostly bored and then I was annoyed. Please, for the love of the force, stop acting like selfless sacrifice is a character flaw– it is good and noble to place the interests of others before yourself! The whole discussion around this absolutely drove me to distraction, especially when another character calls pursuing happiness a “moral imperative.” Just, NO. Here’s the thing: I wanted to like this book because Leia is such a BA character in the “Star Wars” universe; she’s got snark (watch out Han, she ain’t gonna let you get away with crap!) but she also puts herself out there for the cause, and that’s what makes her so compelling! But this version of her just didn’t cut it for me, and certainly didn’t jive with the woman we know and love.
Not as action packed as I hoped but amazing nonetheless. I love Leia but the book made that love more personal I guess because I just relate to her so much, Claudia Grey captured Leia in a great way and Im so glad this story exists. Can't wait to read more
This book was a fantastic addition to the new Star Wars cannon! This is Claudia Grey's 2nd book in the new cannon and it is a fantastic read, it does our princess justice.
This tells the story of Princess Leia at the age of 16 going through her trails to claim rights to the throne of Alderaan, she must choose and complete three test one of mind, body, and heart. Once she completes these challenges she has proven herself worthy of taking her parents place when they are gone as ruler of Alderaan.
It is during these challenges she discovers what her parents are up to, she finds out out them secretly building a rebellion to fight the Empire. This books tells how she finds out and becomes apart of the rebellion. Some very cool things that happen in this book is while on a mission to Naboo she meets Grand Moff Panaka, yes the same Panaka that was Queen Amidalla's bodyguard. He instantly recognizes her and asks her tons of questions about her when she was born, etc.. and plans to tell the Emperor about what he learned that she is in fact the daughter of Anakin Skywalker. Before he can do this he is assassinated by none other than Saw Gerrera and his people. Can you imagine how different a story we would have got if that would have happened?
She also uses the force in this book to save her boyfriend. She does not understand what she did or how she did it but she used the force. Another awesome part in the book is when she is trying to hire a freighter so she can warn the rebellion that the Empire knows where they are. She sees in the distance a junky looking freighter, a older Corellian YT model that she was sure the pilot could use the money for repairs but before she can reach it it flies off into orbit. Now the author doesn't say it is the most famous hunk of junk in the galaxy but come on there is only one junky looking Corellian YT freighter in Star Wars! So I just assume it is none other than the famous Millennium Falcon!
So far I have enjoyed every single book in the new cannon. I'm still waiting to read the stand out stories like Heir to the Empire in the old cannon. The Grey books are the best so far though, with this book and her 1st Lost Stars I hope she writes more because she is an awesome Star Wars story teller!

Why this book:
It’s Star Wars.

Favorite Character:
I like that this reinforces the idea that R2D2 is the true hero of the Rebellion.
Favorite Scene / Quote:
Love the scene on Wobani during her first mercy mission when she sees the Imperial commander smirk at her and in a flash of anger her future self comes to the fore. Good foretelling of the person she will be. The exuberance of young Leia off to prove herself and running afoul of the Empire and the Rebellion’s plans is well done.
In the words of Grand Moff Tarkin from A New Hope, she’s much too trusting. She let Kier Domani behind the curtain way too easily.
The flight on the Chalhuddan ship and Leia’s negotiating the repayment of a favor to the Chalhuddan leader.
Pacing:
This would be a limiting milieu for both author and character. Leia can’t take huge steps in opposition to the Empire without invalidating her later character strokes in the films. It’s unfortunate that the limitations of what happens beyond the scope of this novel is so glaringly apparent in the constrictions that the story finds itself in. You can only go so far in a midquel that requires you to land between the last of the prequels and Rogue One.
Plot Holes/Out of Character:
Based on my perception of Panaka, he seems out-of-character here. But what could 20 years in IMperial service do to a person. Still seems a betrayal what he was planning to do after he met Leia. Mirrors what Kier does later on. Maybe it’s just like the Jedi and Sith, the nuisance of the shades of gray between the two is fulsome and rich.
Hmm Moments:
I feared that they were going to Rogue One all these new characters, except for Holdo.
WTF Moments:
If Tarkin was as aware as is intimated here and in light of the atrocities that were commited, it seems like her would have jailed and executed the royal family and taken Imperial vengeance on the planet.
Meh / PFFT Moments:
While I wanted coming-of-age drama, we seem to be mired in the opera elements of space opera.
