OKAY another Star Wars book that I devoured, may this be the start of an awesome spiral
Need more time to digest this book.
This book is great. I really liked it, despite the gut punches. (That last paragraph, on my gosh, it killed me).
One of my friends called Amilyn, the Luna of the Star Wars universe, and that totally fits.
More people should read this so I can talk to them about this book!!

I loved Claudia Gray's Lost Stars book, so I was really excited to get this one. I listened to the audiobook and was astounded with the production. It was like listening to a movie a lot of the times. There was music, sound effects, background noise, and lots of other things that really helped to immerse the reader. I usually don't like when books do that but this one was very cleanly done. You never had to worry about not being able to hear what she was saying. Instead it lent itself to the immersive nature of the audiobook.
Getting to know more of Leia was a lot of fun. I really enjoy her strong character. While I anticipated one big occurrence in the book, I didn't guess everything. I enjoyed getting to know Alderaan and her parents. It's really cool reading it when you have so much knowledge of the universe. I also really enjoyed getting to know Holdo, who makes an appearance in The Last Jedi. It was interesting rectifying the girl in this book with the strong woman in the movie.
Definitely worth reading if you're a Star Wars fan. It has a lot of adventure and you get to really see Leia's character growth as the rebellion gets going.

This is the story of a young Leia, before the events of A New Hope. She is 16, and has to undertake 3 tasks during a year, as part of their tradition.
The main issue with characters that are involved in other stories AFTER the time period the book is placed in, is we know they are safe. As a result, we need some new characters. Problem with this, we are generally expecting those characters to not be around - because they were not in the films etc.
This book suffers that. Keir is a love interest in the story, her first romance. While not being the heart of the story (that is how Leia gets involved in the rebellion), it is a large portion of the book.
Holdo was in the book, and she was also in the Last Jedi. Author should have dropped the Keir character all together and concentrated on the bond between these two characters. Introduce us to Holdo in more depth - who was a really interesting character in Last Jedi and one i would have liked to have known more about. Instead, she is there, but just weird. A missed opportunity.
The rebellion introduction was well done. Her parents don't want her involved, but Leia being stubborn manages to find trouble all by herself. She makes mistakes and learns a lot about politics - fast. It also sets up the scene when she and Tarkin talk to each other on the Death Star in a New Hope (ie, they have spoken to each other before).
This is also aimed at the younger reader. While this is to applauded, it would be nice to have some more adult books to be released in the new Canon. Too many seem to be to the YA market.
