Cleverly written tour de force in Brisbane’s underbelly. Just when you think it couldn’t get more unbelievable it does - and then you find it has semi-autobiographical elements.
The comments on fatherhood were particularly poignant

Objectively, this book was beautifully written and the language and story telling was clever. I liked how bits that seemed out of place were linked back in to be pivotal at the end (“your end is a dead blue wren”).

However, it was SO SLOW. This took me months to read because I couldn’t get into it (and then the final 100 pages flew by). I found the pacing frustrating - some parts seemed to drag (and then sped through at the end).

This story had me gripped from the beginning. You very quickly care about the characters, and hope they get what they deserve, good or bad.

I loved the mini stories within the story also. The prose is often simply beautiful.

My rating is more like 4.5, would be 5 but the ending wasn't quite as I would've liked.

Solidly enjoyable and excellent prose, but the sheer amount of false endings did me in. That and
Caitlyn and Eli's relationship / Caitlyn's character in general. Caitlyn as a character feels very incomplete, and wtf is that ending.
I might be judging it harshly because I read All Our Shimmering Skies first and found that addresses most issues I had with this book / Dalton's writing style.
