Floyd Gottfredson is definitely one of the great Disney master artists and this volume showcases his prowess of design and layout. The Phantom Blot story is clearly the highlight of the volume. The other stories are good to awful in terms of storytelling and cultural appropriateness. There are some truly abhorrent racial caricatures (it's hard to imagine a time when these depictions were acceptable) in some of these stories. Nevertheless, there is a lot of humor and adventure here if you can overlook the ethnic stereotypes. The bonus material is rich in historical information about Gottfredson and his contributions to the Disney legacy.

One of my friends posted a really cool Mickey Mouse cartoon that I had never seen before ("Runaway Brain") and I had really liked. I haven't seen a whole lot of solo Mickey shorts except for the early black and ones and the ones where he's the straight man to Donald and Goofy but I was kind of blown away by how different it was compared to what I had seen of Mickey Mouse. He said that the Mickey in "Runaway Brain" was basically the version of Mickey in the comics and he linked me to this book which I put on my Amazon Wishlist for my birthday.

I haven't read any of the Disney comics but I loved it and even there were times of to be expected political incorrectness, the stories were really exciting and the art was really inventive and cartoony.

This was such an interesting look into the history of Mickey Mouse and the Disney company. I really enjoyed getting to see the very beginning of each of the concepts and how the cartoon, characters and comics developed and evolved into what we know them as today. As my daughter has been watching the newest cartoons for littles I loved getting to read this.

Not the best start for Floyd Gottfriedson. This one starts as an unfunny satire of Hollywood and really doesn’t pick up its pace until after the halfway point in which a couple storylines hold some interest. Will definitely be going back to other volumes to find what the fuss is about for this strip. The art is quite great but the humor and plot were both lacking

I have been a fan of Mickey and Disney for a long time. I feel like I know a lot about both but I learned a few things from this book. I love the large pictures where you can see a lot of the detail. This is a must have for any Disney fan who wants to learn about the origins of the mouse that started it all.

Another great collection of adventure strips from the 30s. Lots of fun.
