Cribsheet: A Data-Driven Guide to Better, More Relaxed Parenting, from Birth to Preschool

I felt like this book was a good starting point for getting some information I needed in order to do my own research. Since I am currently pregnant with my first child, a friend recommended that I read this book. It discussed some topics that I had looked into already, but it brought up some that had not crossed my mind being that this is a new experience for me. She did admit to being biased in some areas which did make me question whether there were other biases that were not stated. Still, I went into reading this book knowing that I would do my own research rather than relying on anything I read in it.

One of the more calming parenting guides I've read. Oster issues very few maxims, is clear and direct, and looks only at the really big-picture decisionsl. Ultimately, she shows that most of the loud, competing, judgmental voices in the parenting advice arena can be ignored in favor of common sense and what works best for the family as a whole. This is not revelatory--but it is comforting.
Another excellent example of science writing from economist Emily Oster, reviewing the field of research on babies and toddlers. There seemed to be even less useful research on these topics than for pregnancy (the subject of her first book), so the takeaway from most chapters was “it could go either way.” But it was great to read a review of what evidence does exist on potty training, language development, and discipline. The one section that bugged me was the page about Bayesian reasoning, which was summarized mostly as “so what you think is right.” While I think that’s a fair summary of Bayesian methods (use your prior information to evaluate new information), I worry that it could undermine the whole evidence-based approach for some parents, when their priors come from random internet threads. But it’s one page out of a few hundred excellent ones. Recommended reading for parents and people who want good examples of communicating science to lay audiences (especially when most of the science is only correlational).

Tells you a lot about parenting from sleep training to introducing solid foods to different preschool approaches from a data perspective. Everyone has pretty strong opinions on parenting so seeing a book based on unbiased studies was very helpful in making parenting decisions.
