Great romance, so awesome to read stories not usually told in historical romance, and I love a spy story. But it did make me realize that the US Civil War is not a setting I'm particularly interested in.

Very compelling read, some steamy sex (especially if you like tongues), and a point of view with teeth.

I had heard so much about this series but i was kind of disappointed. It was slow burn for sure but almost so slow burn that I didn't believe their romance. I loved the time period, it felt new and different but I just didn't believe in their relationship and the pace with which it moved. I wanted to like it so much more. I think I would probably continue with the series, however. I'd like to see where the rest of the stories go.

I enjoyed this quick read, but since I haven’t yet read too many romance novels, I didn’t always know how it stacks up within the genre in general. My library app kept recommending this book to me, so I decided to give it a read, especially as I have heard that the author Alyssa Cole is a great romance author and one of only a handful of Black authors as successful in the genre as she is-I hope to see more women of color become successful in the historical romance genre!

It’s a detective historical interracial romance story set in the South during the Civil War, so there is definitely some difficult subject matter to work through that the author has to balance, and I appreciate that she doesn’t sugarcoat the realities of enslavement and the brutality of the Confederacy while weaving a plot centered around espionage and falling in love.

I will probably try out some of the author’s other books within at least this series, and am curious what her sci-fi romance(s) are like as well.

A completely fine book. It didn't wow me, but kept my interest. Tbh, I skipped through most of the sex parts, because the relationship didn't make me feel anything special. The sexy times were also kind of random?

Still, I liked our heroine, her grit and determination, her intelligence and heart. Malcom was more of meh for me, though. The relationship, like I mentioned, didn't really feel believable. There was the instant attraction turning into love, but I couldn't get over - is it worth it? It also felt very easy for them to spend time together without anyone noticing...

Still, the author still made me interested in read the next book, so I obviously enjoyed it.

I enjoyed this book, kind of a fantasy but enjoyable. The story was exciting and I kind of wish that it hasn’t been a romance at all. I’d like to read more about Civil War spies.
