This collection of stories that seemingly focus on single members of the DC Universe is a very interesting and blunt look at the personal lives and histories of said superhero’s. It follows their lowest moments, their friendships and connections to the larger universe, and their highest moments, while still alluding to the fact that there is more to come. While telling the story of one person, Ridley is able to introduce others, and tell multiple stories in the process. Ridley is able to achieve such good storytelling and really gets into the point of view of the character he is writing. You can tell how he gets into the head of that character and uses their emotions to tell their own side of the story. It’s clear that things like, Batman being racist for instance, may be able to to be contested, but that is how the character FELT based on their personal interactions with Bruce. It may not be how readers feel, but how that character feasibly could if they existed in real life.

The only issue that was a bit slow was the second one about Bumblebee. It was a strong piece that highlighted her and her husband’s history really well. I knew little, well really nothing, about either character until this story. It just wasn’t as interesting to me, but others may enjoy learning new things about the characters!

I really liked this book but it's a tedious read. The pacing is slow, the prose dense, and the text tiny. Combined, it makes for sluggish reading. Luckily, one good thing about the book being long is that the reader has more opportunities to see the amazing artwork. Visually stunning, this a literal graphic novel. It's like an adult reading level picture book. The Other History of the DC Universe is a very rewarding read.
