Part of the story sometimes felt a tad unrealistic, but I was unable to overlook this to a large extent because of the great atmosphere, intimate storytelling, and the wonderful relationships that are depicted in the book. I think the reason why I thought it was unrealistic was because Lisbeth was able to not incorporate her family's, indeed the whole society's, opinions on black people from a very early age, even though Mattie wasn't there to influence her from a pretty early age. Mattie's leaving could very well have jaded Lisbeth and made her think that you can't trust black people, no matter how much you love them. Instead, she continued having a very favorable view of black people and not listening to her family. I really hope many people would have the heart to not listen to their family's/society's opinions in a situation like that, but I rather doubt it.

Anyway, the book was great, I really enjoyed it. It was very heartwarming.

This novel spoke to my heart, uncovered truths of love, family and ugliness of slavery. It is passionate and intriguing. I couldn't put it down

Oh my gosh, I loved this book so much! It made me sad and it also made me cry tears of happiness.

Set in the 1800's, Yellow Crocus is the story of a wealthy white family, who run a plantation and keep slaves as workers. The family have a baby daughter, Lisbeth, and a young female slave, Mattie, is brought into the house to be Lisbeth's wet nurse. Mattie had only just had a baby of her own a few months before, and by being forced to take care of Lisbeth, was then unable to see her own child. At first Mattie feels hatred for this new baby that has taken her own child from her, but very soon after a beautiful relationship forms between the two of them.

I felt a lot of different emotions while reading this book - hatred for the people who kept slaves in the first place, and the way that Mattie and the other slaves were treated, relief at the relationship between Mattie and Lisbeth, sadness for Mattie not being able to see her own child, and above all happiness at the end!

There was something about this book that made it readable and interesting. I enjoyed it because it was a new perspective; written through the eyes and voice of the white girl raised by slaves. As interesting as that perspective was, it was not as fleshed out as it might have been, which could have made it even more interesting.

I didn't understand the parents, and the plot was a little too clean and simple, but I liked that Lisbeth recognized her parents were wrong and stayed true to her convictions.

LOVED this book - i picked it up because the reader won an Audie award for best female performance in an audio book this year for it. The story was wonderful and the reader is too. great read.

Nice slave/master story that, given the slavery backdrop, was not as horrendously had to read as some of these stories can be while still conveying the horrendousness of human ownership and their feelings in having someone else decide on their faith and the faith of their family. Very nice tale.

I wasn't surprised to see that the author was a birth doula since the book is heavy on childbirth and breastfeeding. This was a free book from Goodreads so I hate not giving it a higher rating but I almost stopped about a third of the way in because the beginning was too slow with too much breastfeeding detail. Then the ending is way too explicit in describing a difficult, almost horrific, childbirth. The plot is good but the writing was too simple for me. It would probably make a good young adult book if a few sections were deleted. I'll always remember this book for its unique story of slavery and the "happy" ending.
