Teens aren’t my favorite protagonists. Didn’t look forward to reading it.

Some slight spoilers below, marked just in case.
The reason I marked this book as a three comes down to the way this author addresses religion. It was very apparent and rather in your face with all of the "decent" characters you're supposed to feel for to openly reject religion while the bad characters you're made to hate revel in their faith. It felt rather off to me.
It was also very off-putting hearing some of the rural terms as... Rural folks, especially children wouldn't know or act in certain ways. A child in an abusive home is not going to understand gypsy is a slur in other regions. Grown men will not joke about being politically correct when joking offensively with old friends. The comments of Emma being uncomfortable around police solely for her race was also a bit laughable considering there were other Latinos in the town treated well.
Most importantly, a rural town I'm a valley will not have decent internet. Certainly not to watch TV online. Whenever my family goes to the mountains, we lose all service. This was the most unbelievable of them all.
Great story, but it was clearly written by someone who does not have an accurate understanding of rural America, and it does show if you live in rural America.

3.5⭐️. I went into this book blindly not really knowing much about it- I thought it was a thriller about a teenage girl gone missing. Little did I know there was a lot more to this story.
