Set in Paris after Napoleon. Daniel Connor is on his way to Paris to work. He is a medical student and is carrying letters of introduction and gifts for Cuvier (the man he is going to work for). While on the way he is robbed of these items, but not his money. He learns when filing his report that the thief was Lucienne Bernard. A woman that is not only a scholar, but also a thief. This begins Daniel's journey to discover why Lucienne took his items and his effort to get them back. I found the book to be really slow moving. The writing did make you feel as though you were in Paris, but it felt like not much was happening for such a short book.
adventurous

The historical and scientific aspects of this novel are incredible. It is a really well researched book. However, I thought the actually story was pretty lame and it didn't do a whole lot for me.

Very boring book. I didn't get very far before giving up.

Brilliant. Rebecca Stott is the best writer of literary historical thrillers. With characters you want to follow and a plot that pulls you throughthe book, this is a page turner. Wonderful pieces of philosophy and natural history tied to the historical period in Paris after Napoleon was sent to St. Helena.

Set in Paris after the fall of Napoleon a newly arrived medical student, Daniel Connor, becomes involved with a band of thieves in his attempt to find his stolen research and the exotic female thief. The characters are fictitious, but the history is accurate - great way to explore this time period. Great on audio.

There were some interesting historical facts in this book about Paris right after Napoleon, but the story was a little boring and never really pulled me in. I wish it was a little more fast paced.
