Some of these pages brought me to tears. Seeing these words (ones I have never verbalized, but have struggled with just the same) helped me realize I’m not alone in often feeling like “other” no matter where I am or who I’m surrounded by. The celebration of “mixed” was beautiful, and I found myself smiling while reading them. I’m glad I bought this book, because I’m sure I will be revisiting it time and time again.

There is such a beautiful intimacy of allowing readers to get to know the duality of being a mixed child - Avan’s words juxtaposed against those that wrote in to him provides a great account into what it really feels like to grow up mixed race (and I’m not just saying this because I am one of those whose words are featured in the book). While I wish the poems would have been slightly longer in length, a considerable amount of them struck a chord with me in so many ways - my notable favourites are Miss Universe and The Kids Aren’t All White.
Mixed Feelings is a gift from a mixed kid’s perspective, an insight to those curious of how variations in ethnicity and cultural differences may have affected us in a myriad of ways.

I started reading the book in 2019? Stopped because tbh not really a poetry person. Finishing the book more recently definitely impact how I felt. Also, I found it confusing the way the writing was shared on an editing level. I wasn't always sure which piece was by Avan and which was by the author who began their piece. I think many may find comfort and solidarity with this collection. It just wasn't for me and that's ok.
