This one is intense - lots of tensions building up (romantically and in-world), brought to satisfying conclusions :)

A book that I devoured ><

After a first book that I really liked, I plunged into this second book and I LOVED it !

What I particularly liked :
- the universe still so rich ! This time, we have more explanation on the functioning of the Court and especially on the verwulfen (I would love to have a book that takes place in Scandinavia =D)
- the multiple plots around the humanists, the "mech '" (I loved to know more about them and I really liked seeing the different automatons !) and the treaty with the verwulfen ! And of course Colchester whom I loved to hate =D (I hope we will see the famous network to help the young women that Lena wants to create !)
- huge crush for the characters, whether the main ones (LOVE Lena who was so courageous despite everything she's been through <3) or the secondary ones (Astrid whom I adored and whom I would very much like to see with her own book, Lynch which intrigues me a lot but also the humanists whom we saw like Rosalind and of course always Leo <3)
- romance was PFIOULALALA! I loved seeing Lena and Will turn around each other and finally succumb to it <3

In short, a book as good or even better than the previous one and I can't wait to read the next one with Lynch =D

I really enjoyed this book. I found it vastly better than the first one, mostly because Lena and Will seemed more likable to me than Blade and Honoria. There's just something about these two that grabbed me. It's also one of the very few books out there that has me thinking of looking for more werewolf main characters. I've always had a penchant for vampires and been largely indifferent to werewolves, but this one really has me thinking. Though I know the rest of the series deals more with the vampires than the wolves, it has me more excited to read the rest of the series than I felt with the first one. I just love this book.

Heart of Iron
4 Stars

Lena Todd walks among the Echelon in order to gather information for the human resistance. After Lena inadvertently becomes involved in a dangerous web of lies and deceit, Will Carver, a Verewulfen with a price on his head, realizes that he is the only one who can keep her safe despite the fact that it is he who poses the greatest threat to her heart and soul.

The fantastic world building established in the first book continues with more information on the conflicts between the Ecehlon, or Blue Bloods (aristocracy who voluntarily expose themselves to a vampirism inducing virus), the humans (Thralls who provide sex and blood to the Ecehlon, and regular people who are forced to donate blood in the form of a tax), and the Verwulfen (werewolves who are considered little more than beasts and have been exterminated or enslaved).

While the pacing is slow in the beginning, it eventually picks up and the action-packed climax and resolution are exciting and satisfying. Lena and Will’s romance is rocky at first as she comes across as spoiled and childish, and his sexy broodiness does not always compensate for his stoic self-deprication. That said, their relationship improves during the second half of the book when they actually begin to communicate and they have some wonderfully intense and emotional scenes together.

The plot revolving around the human resistance to the Blue-Bloods and the peace negations with the Scandinavian Verwulfen is compelling and it will be interesting to see where the next book goes with this.

All in all, Heart of Iron is a worthwhile read for its superb dystopian and steampunk elements, intriguing plot and solid romance.

Not as good as the first in the series, since there were some recycled ideas. I also thought Lena was an annoying character who made stupid decisions, so there was that.

Loved this story! A great plot, a brooding hero, and lots of action and heat.
Adding .5 star because a certain part of Lena and Will’s arc made me a bit
