This is such a sweet book. Perfect for any kid feeling like a part of them is not perfect just the way it is. I can think of my of my students who need this book. There’s so many families who need this book. I could not put it down. It’s fantastic.

This made me tear up 🥹 I have been on this kind of hair love journey and have witnessed it in so many others. The author perfectly captured the way hair appearance can be deeply ingrained into families over generations. The art was adorable and the story was well thought out. My only drawback was that I wish
Marlene’s mother challenged her family’s commentary on her daughter’s appearance. That feeling of dreading seeing family members because of what they might say, was so relatable for me and I wish there was some follow up to that.

This graphic novel is incredibly intentional and empowering. It tells the story of what it means for a young Dominican girl to embrace herself in a world where assimilation and being “presentable” is praised over the radical power of accepting yourself as you are. Our natural crown is so beautiful and versatile!

Such a beautiful and emotional read. I read it in a library and tear up in public. The drawing are as beautiful as the story. The characters are great and Marlene is such a good MC

I am still thinking of a rating.  I really enjoyed this book! They covered a lot of topics that effect young girls.  I didn’t like the beginning, the beautician, the bullies and her mom could kick rocks!  Mom’s hair “tradition” was one I experienced as well.  Once a month I was at the shop..and yes I sweated it out with all the sports I played.  When I went natural, my parents raised their eyebrows and said that look isn’t for everyone. Eight years later, I’m loc’d up and my mom is natural..hair flourishing!

Tia Ruby rocks!  Aunties rock! So glad she was able to give Marlene a five nuggets of their past.  Mom see’s so much of herself in Marlene and she doesn’t want to her to hurt the way she did. Not recognizing how she is hurting her, by not listening or paying attention to her.  Growth occurred with all..except them boys!

Love the moral of the story. Her village is strong and full of love!  Her best friend never swayed with her stance, encouragement and was down for whateva with anyone who had something to say!  She rocks! We all need her!  So…I’ll give it a 5.
