Technically, I listened to this book on the flight to Rome. It was really fabulous, and had I actually read this in book format, I probably would have given it 5 stars.

This book had a lot going on and I am unsure about how I feel about any of it. Another one I will need to think about before rating.

This was a very fast interesting read. It actually caused me to questionthings after I was finished rather than during the actual read. I enjoyed the final part of the story more once you learned more about Hanna'a past and how the relationship affected the boys later relationships.

The Reader follows the somewhat controversial story of 15-year-old Michael Berg and his older lover Hanna. Hanna who helps Michael when she finds him ill near her house one day becomes his lover and the two enjoy their time together including a large amount of time spent with Michael reading to Hanna, until she disappears one day without a trace. It is only several years later that Michael and Hanna cross paths again, this time in a court of law where Michael is a law student and Hanna is a defendant in a Nazi war crimes case. As the trial progresses Michael learns more about the situation and realises that Hanna may be hiding a secret which if revealed would help her case. An interesting and powerful story, but best read before seeing the film!

It was more philosophical than I expected. The musings about the trial is very thought provoking.
