Really, fantastic book. The writing was easy, the sentences were short and so were the chapters.
A quick read about a 15 year old boy falling in love and having an affair with a 36 year old woman, only for him to find out that she worked in a Concentration camp, is illiterate and goes to jail. I love the story a lot, because it was so original.
Even though the writing was very distant, and I get why people don't like it, I really liked the way the author described their abusive relationship and how Michael struggled later in life. It was not described in endless paragraphs, the author was able to depict their character flaws and struggles quick and well. It was an extremely well done piece of literature, which showed a man, that could not let go of his first and seemingly only love, even though he tells the reader, that he doesn't feel anything when he sees her later in court. Something fascinating to see and read about.

okay i read this like 2 weeks ago but didn’t want to rate it/post it on goodreads bc i was sending it to amanda as a surprise after i read it and so i waited to post. BUT OMG lemme tell you. what a controversial, erotic, morally questionable, well-written literature masterpiece. thought provoking and edgy. def one of my all time favorites. the characters are unlikable and unjustifiable but i was still sympathetic to them which is maybe a moral concern but it’s written in a way that i had no choice but to be at least somewhat sympathetic

Kann oder darf man das Handeln von KZ-Aufsehern verstehen?
Hanna Schmitz ist Analphabetin, war allerdings zu Nazi-Zeiten Aufseherin in einem KZ. Nachdem das KZ aufgelöst worden war, wurden die Insassen auf einen Todesmarsch geschickt. Sie machten Pause in einer Kirche, welche während ihres Aufenthalts bombardiert wurde. Außer eine Mutter und ihr Kind verbrannten alle, weil die Aufseherinnen es nicht für nötig hielten die Türen zu öffnen. Hanna soll dabei die Anführerin gewesen sein. In den 60er Jahren wird sie dann angeklagt.
Das ist meiner Meinung nach aber nicht ihr einziges Verbrechen.
Michael Berg ist am Anfang des Buches 15 Jahre alt. Nachdem Hanna ihm geholfen hat treffen sie sich öfter und haben auch eine Beziehung. Allerdings keine offizielle.
Durch diese Beziehung wurde eigentlich Michaels komplettes Leben geprägt. Er hält auch den Kontakt während ihrer Haft. Von ihr lösen kann er sich auch erst wirklich nach ihrem Tod.
Hanna Schmitz hat mit 36 Jahren ein Kind ausgenutzt, damit er ihr vorliest, da sie es selbst nicht konnte. Michael versucht im Buch ihre Taten zu Nazi-Zeiten immer wieder zu entschuldigen, aber denkt nie wirklich darüber nach was sie ihm eigentlich angetan hat. Hanna selbst, weiß das ihr Handeln unentschuldbar ist, aber ob das nur für ihr Handeln als Aufseherin gilt oder auch für Michael ist unklar.
Der Roman ist gut gelungen, die Sprache ist wirklich sehr gut und es ist spannend. Allerdings ist die Liebesgeschichte sehr streitbar. Außerdem wird Hanna durchgehend als positiv dargestellt, was aufgrund ihrer Vergangenheit sehr provokant ist.
