Sad. What a waste of a life was what ran through my mind. I actually found the trial scenes in the film version more compelling but it's a very well-written, taut book, no words wasted. It's not often you read a post-WW2 book written in/ set in Germany and dredges up questions.

Retroactive review

Eerie, scintillating, mysterious,  lonely, and deeply empathic.

This story echoes a loss and deeply embedded trauma in myself. The passion and pain of the narrative are thinly veiled under stark clinical recollection.

Actual rating: 3.5/5

This book was pretty good. I definitely enjoyed the second half of this book more than the first half though.

Really enjoyed it and I got teary eyed at the end!

Edit: TW: pedophilia. Idc about the contents but a book that shows a relationship between an adult and a child without showing it as problematic does not deserve 4 stars (which I had previously given..)

This is one of those books that has an impact on you. The kind that makes you ask questions. The writing was great.
