This book is about a woman who goes to the Middle East to run a program that aims to de-radicalize women who were in Isis to return them to their countries of origin. The novel is a story of the work she tries to do, the people she meets, and all kinds of ethical gray areas. Little bits of thriller and romance energy here and there as well. Loved it. The author used to do very similar work, which adds a note of realness to the whole thing.

Wow. I wish this had won the women's prize. Some stories feel truer than facts. This was one of them. The combination of dark humour and relentless faith in humanity was exactly balanced. The sense that racism and misogyny seem to chase women everywhere, even in so-called benevolent organisations - so finely done. Even the afterword was eminently readable and engaging, right down to the list of actual reports written during her time working for the UN in Iraq. The author's use of humour is so rare in contemporary fiction. I can't wait to read what she writes next.
