my god i loved this book.
I ate it up faster than Scarlett and Quinn

5 stars

There are two things for me that are utterly irresistible when it comes to sapphic books:
1. A strong female lead who fights to protect her partner
2. An audibook with great narrators

What does this book offer? Well, a gloriously strong female lead, an assassin even who can fight like no one else and an audio book version that's narrated by not one, but two of the most talented narrators ever.

I guess, especially the latter might have influenced my rating quite a bit, but anyone who dares to disagree should really check out the audio sample on Audible. Honestly, especially Islay Jacobs could probably read anything to me and I'd love it.

Luckily, this book (even without the narration) was actually pretty damn enjoyable - be it for the interesting fantasy world, with the unique distribution of magic though mansions and houses, the action packed story filled to the brim with secrets, betrayals and heists or how about the hilarious yet thrilling love/hate relationship between an assassin and a not so secret poisoner.

The latter especially was one of the highlights of this book, with Scarlett and Quinn not only forming a perfect comedy duo at times, but also slowly but surely forming the perfect relationship.
Lastly, I need to add that while the "sex first, feelings later" trope might be used a lot in books like this, I'm not much used to it in sapphic titles and I simply loved the slow transition.

Definitely my favorite book of the series!

I wanted to like it. I was hyped. However, it's just kind of a mess coddled by the fact that sapphics just don't have as many choices right now.

The world building is a mess. There's spelled BDSM clubs, hidden daggers, katanas, motorcycles, carriages (?), monarchies, crop tops, magic, apothecarists, and no guns...? I'm a little confused. How are we dressing? Is this regeancy agacent or urban fantasy? If it's both, why wasn't that explained? You have motorcycles but not guns? Um, no. The creation myth for the tearing of the worlds was cool, but it was just kind of glossed over along with the rest of the world building.

The developmental editing seems really haphazard. Scarlett and Quinn's first few encounters are repedetive sexy cat-and-mouse, and it looks like the editor told the author to chop off the first third of the book (I'm not kidding, it's 20%) and then just toss it into the final pages as a bonus novella. It reads sloppy. It's not as fun to open up a book understanding that the enemies and lover dynamic has already been established. That's just taking a knife to the juggular of the tension (you know, the corner stone of enemies to lovers books?).

Establishing the two main characters as enemies and lovers in the first few pages did fuckall for all the sex they weren't having. They did fuck but it was a lot of fantasizing and fade to black. They truly only went into detail in the final few spicy scenes which was annoying. As a reader, I didn't understand why they were established lovers if I didn't get to see that and they were already going to go through the main enemies to lovers tropes anyways on their way to becoming actual lovers (one bed, motorcycle sharing, sparring, accidental injury, etc). Again, the developmental editing did this book no favors.

The plot was silly and the third act and one of the main character's reactions to everything unfolding was stupid and frustrating.

I'm just so bummed.

DID NOT FINISH: 31%

Only read 31% of the book and I will just put it down because if I read more I will force myself to finish it. I will be trying my luck with her other series since it is newer and more popular (and has gay vampires in it lol) but this is just not for me, I am finding it so hard to connect with the characters or be intrigued by the plot. And sure 31% is hardly anything but I did start with the little novella right before this one so I had a certain level of familiarity with the characters. The romance between Quinn and Scarlett wasn’t looking like it was really going anywhere either so I am going to pass on this series.
