I don’t know if it made me feel better or worse about my relationship with my father
This is a deeply personal and emotionally changing books. I really loved this work by Kafka. I found myself feeling tight in my stomach while reading it. Though the letter was never received by Hermann Kafka, the book really serves as a testament to childhood trauma and for me, attachment styles and how that carries on into our adulthood. Kafka details the insecurities and deficiencies he felt within himself, bred down from his father’s own childhood, and I think anyone with parental trauma will relate to that sentiment. Kafka reaches desperation to gain his father’s approval, with his father and himself passed before achieving that.
To me, this is the most illuminating pieces of literature I’ve had the pleasure of reading. However, there’s a point to make that maybe it’s too personal. Letter to my Father wasn’t intended for the public, it’s a private account only intended to be read by his father’s eyes. The fact that it was ever published raises some ethical questions about exposing one’s most vulnerable thoughts, not intended for public consumption. But despite that, I still think it’s remarkable and it may be an essential key to grasping the mind of Kafka.

Kafka's view of not only the way his father shaped his life, but also the intentions behind his fathers actions and the way they both shaped their relationship was incredibly insightful. He maintained a mature and objective perspective throughout the letter whilst still holding his father accountable for his actions and outlining the lasting affects they had both on him and others in their lives. It is one of the best pieces of non-fiction i have ever read.
