Basically a 600 page battle, but that’s not to say I didn’t enjoy it, just looking for a little more depth. Overall the series was very enjoyable and easy to read, one of the better ones i’ve read this year.

Fast paced addition to Codex Alera finds Tavi coming back to Alera with the Canim, facing a land under seige from the Vord, and facing a potential battle with Attis/Aquitine, who was named ruler in Tavi's absence.
The problem is, of course, no one is entirely sure if Tavi is coming home. And there are plenty who doesn't want him to return, and doubt his ability to rule Alera even if he does. Tavi must face a number of battles - prove his furycrafting; maintain a tenuous alliance with the Canim; defeat the Vord Queen; and calm an angry Katai (who just figured out that generally, Citizens do not merely have sex with those they wish to marry) - all while keeping some pretty big secretes of his own.
Oh, and Isana and Aris? Do they manage to get get themselves into their own trouble? Of course they do. Which is probably for the best, since Attis' solution to his political struggles was to propose marriage to Isana - not a bad solution, granted, but it didn't sit too well with Aris.

This is just a quick thought on the series as a whole, now that I have finished. I loved the pacing of Butcher's Codex Alera, and his characters and world building are superb. With a six book series, all read in rapid succession, you do tend recognize his writing quirks (eye brows are constantly raising, as are small smiles curling from the edges of mouths, etc).
I thought that the end of the series had a little issue with power creep, but with the story he set up I suppose that was inevitable. The magic system was still believable at the end. . . but only barely. I'd say if you are a fantasy fan, this series is one that will hit all the right buttons.

I might have given this 4 stars if I hadn't been on a binge and read all 6 books in this series in rapid succession. There are only so many accounts of desperate battles you can read, without beginning to find them tedious, no matter how well written.
I was also a little disappointed at how the battle between Tavi and the Vord queen was resolved. We kept being told that only cleverness was going to win the day as the Vord queen was so much stronger, but I didn't find too much cleverness in evidence. I think books #1 and #4 were the pick of the bunch in that respect.
I enjoyed this series, but if I re-read it I will do it in more digestible chunks next time.

Great finish to a great series.
The only thing I wished was that there was a bit more human interest, just a little more insight into the internal struggles. Most of what was highlighted revolved around the "bad" guy.
Anyway still a fabulous read and would read the series again someday soon. =D
