Silas House has a knack for writing strong & believable Kentucky women, and I've known quite a few (both sides of my family and then some.) This is the story of Vine, a Cherokee woman in Easter Kentucky who marries an Irish man during the time of WWI. House is very descriptive, and he gives the reader real characters that don't fall into the typical stereotype of "country folk," which is very refreshing. I was introduced to Vine & her friend Serena in Coal Tattoo...a much older Vine that is. It was interesting to hear about her past. I plan to check out Clay's Quilt next.

This was my first adventure within the realm of Appalachian Literature. And it didn’t disappoint. While I found it a breeze to read, there clearly were motifs and styles that I’ve not encountered often. This was a book that deserves to be savored (just like forgiveness), rather than deconstructed. So this is all my review will say.

The writing is lovely and the characters interesting. However, the beginning of story was very slow. Maybe they didn't want to lose any of the lovely writing, but this book could have been edited a little more.

Beautifully written, but I just didn't love the story. I did enjoy the setting and reading what life was like in Kentucky and East TN.

Such a poetic novel, with a great story (though not always easy to read!). Highly recommend.

4.5 stars. Beautifully written, and such a clear voice for the main character Vine.
