Super characterisation. I particularly liked the matter-of-fact way in which the author handled the main character's deafness - not as a disability but something she had to deal with on a daily basis, especially when getting lost in a damp, insect-infested forest in Sweden investigating a series of murders! There were some other wonderfully quirky characters which I also loved and the plot was sound. Great to see a British writer living in Sweden take the scandi thriller market by storm.

When the eyeless bodies of two local hunters are discovered in the vast forest of Swedish town Gavrik, it falls upon deaf journalist Tuva Moodyson to write a report for the local newspaper. With startling similarities to the Medusa killings of 20-years earlier, Tuva unearths long-hidden secrets within the community and must confront her own fears in her quest to bring the killer to justice.

I really enjoyed Dark Pines and thought it was a great start to this new crime-thriller series set in Sweden. Tuva is a charismatic female protagonist who is both strong and independent, yet struggling with certain aspects of her personal life. Her mother is in the final throes of a terminal illness and Tuva has returned to Gavrik from the UK despite their somewhat strained relationship.

The bleak Swedish winter landscape sets the scene nicely and it's this that creates a tension-filled, suspenseful atmosphere. The author's descriptions of the wilderness and its wildlife were a pleasure to read. I was completely immersed and gripped by this intelligent and skillfully plotted novel.

The second book in this series, Red Snow, is due to be published later this year and I eagerly await it landing on my bookshelf.

Loved this dark, gripping story. You can feel the forest and dark, gloomy weather emanating from the book. There are lots of quirky characters, reminding me a little of twin peaks, especially the troll carving sisters. Truck driving journalist, Tuva, is an engaging character, who is torn between her job and visiting her sick mother. She wears hearing aids which don’t combine well with the wet gloomy weather.
The final few chapters really did have my heart pounding. Fabulous stuff.

I thought this was good, tense and kept me guessing. I got annoyed with Tuva quite often for getting herself into ridiculous situations and for not visiting her mum enough. There were several characters that I wanted to know more about so I'd like to read more of this series to hopefully find out more of their back story.

Na samym początku muszę przyznać, że byłam dość negatywnie nastawiona do tej książki - gdzieś przeczytałam jakąś negatywną recenzję i zasugerowałam się nią całkiem niepotrzebnie, bo wystarczyło, żebym przeczytała kilka rozdziałów i dała się porwać do szwedzkiej głuszy, gdzie tylko drzewa, łosie, paskudne i odrażające trolle z drewna i zabójca wyłupiający swym ofiarom oczy. Brzmi kusząco, prawda? ;) Autor dobrze wie, jak dozować napięcie i stworzyć niezapomniany klimat. Podczas lektury często byłam w stanie przywołać zapach lasu i wyobrazić sobie otaczającą bohaterów rzeczywistość.

"Dark Pines" written by Will Dean is the first in the deaf journalist, Tuva Moodyson series set in Sweden and was featured on the Sunday morning tv show 'The Zoe Ball Book Club'.
After reading some rave reviews for this book and enjoying a lot of social media time, I was really looking forward to reading it and was hoping and expecting a unique and tense, crime thriller.
However, I found the main protagonist Tuva to be boring and the atmospheric setting to be over detailed which therefore came across as dull. Sadly, overall I found the premise and content desperately lacking.
I maybe well be in the minority with this story as it has gone down well with many readers. I DNF before half way through and skipped to the last couple of chapters to find the murderer was exactly who I thought it was and that I hadn't really missed anything.
I'm not saying don't read this book, if you enjoy slow, atmospheric, detailed crime books set in Sweden, you may well enjoy it, it just wasn't for me.

Really enjoyed Tuva - a new detective! Excellent - only 4 stars because I guessed who it was half way through but didn't spoil my enjoyment.
