It was boring and I couldn't really connect to the characters or plot

This is the first book in the Tuva Moodyson series. A killer is on the loose in deepest darkest forests of Sweden, killing men and removing their eyes. Is the killer a copycat or has the original 1990s murderer returned? Local journalist Tuva is investigating.

I wanted to love this book having heard great things about the series (which I will continue to read since I already own), but I found Tuva to be rude and nonsensical at times, and the repeated lack of batteries in her hearing aids to be a huge distraction to the plot. Now I'm sure that Tuva's character was meant to be standoffish, but the huge chip on her shoulder about having to move to Gavrik to be closer to her mum really started to grate on me after a while. Particularly as she then spends the majority of the book not visiting the terminally ill mother in question!

The strange characters that live in the forest are very well written and give you plenty of red herrings as to the real killer. And you can really tell the Will Dean lives in the forest from his description of what it feels, sounds and smells like. Despite Tuva's lack of organisation to just get some fresh batteries in her aids every morning, I can see how she might grow into a slightly more likeable character if she'd just attempt to be more pleasant and accept her surroundings. Maybe that happens in the next book? I shall soon see!

I didn't want to hate this book, really, I didn't...

It's just... At first I didn't like Tuva. I know she does nothing wrong essentially, but I'm not the biggest fan of news reporters. Yes, she's doing her job, but I can't help but have this distaste in my mouth...

I was willing to give it the benefit of the doubt, though, and to say I was disappointed would be an understatement.

The writing was... questionable. It has a Wattpad feel with all the descriptions. Why do we have to know every single thing she does? I don't care about her eating habits or how much she hates nature. She's just running around, back and forth, back and forth. And she gives us nothing. Most of the stuff we figure out from the police. The point is, half of this book is incredibly unimportant and extremely chaotic. The book tries to be so smart and poetic sometimes, that it turns out completely ridiculous...

At least the chapters were short...
