ok, truly feels a bit life altering: after a lifetime of being scared of the gym and particularly weightlifting, this book has moved me to go touch barbell.
this is what i have been missing! a focus on building practical strength, rather than losing weight/looking good/moving this five pound dumbbell but nothing more because as a woman you wouldn’t want to look too bulky, would you? and guides you through everything you’d need to know to start, great for a total noob like me.

I wish something like this existed back when I was in high school---the horrible dudes on the sports teams kept me out of the weight room, but I love it now. If you're curious about weight training, this is a great way to get started. Liftoff is a guide to getting into strength training (and maybe fitness more broadly, but really strength training) without shame or toxicity or bro-ishness.
I'm so glad I found this book: it's a straightforward, kind, and thorough guide to getting into strength training. Casey moves you from understanding movements without weight, to doing the movements with dumbbells (starting very light! there's a way for just about anyone to do it!) and onto the intimidating but very rewarding barbell. The book is full of good info about how to get into strength training, how to keep up the habit, how to support yourself, how to get enough rest, and how to progress.
The book comes with a spreadsheet that guides you through all three phases of the program (bodyweight; dumbbells; barbell), offering videos and workout templates. The workouts are short---about an hour---and might leave you lightly sore, but not wrecked.

I'm a long-time fan of Casey's extremely funny and incisive writing and cultural commentary (her "She's a Beast" newsletter is a genuine treasure that I highly recommend), and I used Liftoff as a starting point to resume weightlifting. I'm in somewhat unique circumstances: rural area with no gym closer than 45 minutes, and currently in a 31' travel trailer with no room for a barbell. But! Casey's encouraging focus on the well-established basics of how to get stronger and ability to hilariously lambaste diet culture/hustle culture/capitalism/patriarchy bullshit made me feel confident enough to adapt her program for my purposes with an adjustable kettlebell. Unsurprisingly, I'm stronger again! And happy about it! I actually need to get a second kettlebell, yeehaw. Liftoff would be great for someone totally new to lifting, someone who wants a refreshing refresher of the basics, and everyone in between.
